About the class
The Reading YMCA runs American Red Cross certification courses, including Lifeguard Certification. The course teaches entry level participants how to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies, and how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel arrive. Those who finish successfully earn an American Red Cross certificate in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED.
This is a blended course. An online portion, which takes roughly six to eight hours, must be completed before the in person sessions. A link is emailed about a week ahead of the in person dates, along with detailed instructions. In person sessions run Friday evening plus Saturday and Sunday during the day, and times can shift based on the needs of the group.
Swimming prerequisites apply: swim 150 yards continuously, tread water for two minutes using legs only and then swim 50 yards, and complete a timed brick test that includes a surface dive to retrieve a 10 pound object and an exit from the water without steps or a ladder. Register online or at the front desk through the YMCA program page. Questions can go to Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Instructor Rebecca Beres at 610-378-4733.
