AI Transparency Statement

We use AI throughout BerksConnect, and we would rather say so plainly than have you wonder. This page is the full record of where AI works on the platform, what people oversee, and how to reach a person when something is wrong. A shorter version lives on our about page.

Why We Use AI

We use AI because we believe in it. This technology looks to us like the future of how information gets organized and how software gets built, and we would rather work with it well than work against it. BerksConnect is, in part, a bet that a local platform built this way can serve a county better than one built the old way.

We are also a small company. Berks County has thousands of businesses and more happening every week than any small staff could track by hand. Keeping thousands of listings current, describing every event on the calendar, covering county news from public records, gathering job openings: doing all of that manually would take a staff many times our size, and the economics of local media stopped supporting staffs like that years ago. AI changes the economics. It lets a small local team give the county coverage it could not otherwise have, and it is a large part of why listing a business here is free.

It also spreads attention evenly. The thousandth business page gets the same care as the first, and a Tuesday community event gets a description as considered as opening night at the arena. What AI does not do is set direction: people decide what it works on, write the rules it follows, and answer for what stays published. The rest of this page is the specific record of where it works and how we oversee it.

Where AI Works

  • Review summaries. We aggregate reviews from third-party platforms, and AI summarizes their common themes and sentiment. Summaries reflect what reviewers actually wrote. We do not write, purchase, or fabricate reviews, and never will.
  • Business descriptions. For pages no owner has claimed yet, AI drafts a description from the business's category, services, location, and publicly available information. When an owner claims their page, their own words replace anything we generated.
  • Guides and blog posts. AI thoroughly researches and writes our guides and blog posts, and they are published under our editorial review. Guides name real Berks County businesses and places. The featured image at the top of a guide or blog post is AI-generated. Within a post, images shown with a business named in it are photos of that actual business, and we may also include real photographs from time to time.
  • Events. Listings from major venues and teams are gathered automatically from the schedules they publish themselves: Santander Arena and the Santander Performing Arts Center, the Reading Royals, and the Reading Fightin Phils through Minor League Baseball's official schedule system. Dates, times, and venues are carried from those sources as published, and we check the sources nightly so reschedules and cancellations follow them. AI writes the description on each of these listings, because most schedule entries arrive with little or none: it works from the source's facts plus research such as the event's own page and the team's published promotional schedule, and every listing passes an automated safety review before it publishes. People set the rules these listings run under, spot-check the results, and can edit or remove any listing.
  • Images. The featured images on our guides and blog posts are AI-generated, even when they look like photographs of real places; images shown with a business named in a post are photos of that actual business, and posts may also include real photographs. Event listings show the artwork the venue or team publishes when it exists; community events without artwork get an AI-generated scene image instead. Photos and logos on business pages come from the businesses themselves or their public listings, not from AI.
  • News. The Berks Beat, our county news desk, is produced with AI doing the jobs a newsroom does, under our published News Editorial Standards. Stories are drafted from official public records, and every story cites the records it came from.
  • Jobs. Automated crawlers gather openings from government and employer websites. Job descriptions are carried verbatim from the source, and listings expire rather than linger when we can no longer confirm them.
  • Search. Site search matches meaning, not just exact words: AI models turn every listing, event, article, and job posting into a representation of what it is about, and searches run against that understanding alongside traditional keyword matching. A search for fixing a furnace can find heating companies that never use those words. AI does not write search results; it helps find pages that already exist.   • Listings upkeep. AI helps keep thousands of listings current across the county: hours, categories, and business details drawn from public information.
  • Social media and newsletters. Some of our social media posts and newsletter sections are assembled automatically from listings and content already published on the site.

Automation and Crawlers

Alongside AI, BerksConnect runs automated collectors: the crawlers that gather job openings, the nightly checks that keep event schedules in sync with the venues, and the tools that read business websites and other public sources to keep listings current. They read only public pages and published feeds, the kind meant to be read: RSS feeds, calendar files, official schedule systems, and pages any visitor could open in a browser. They run on gentle schedules, checking most sources about once a day.

Our collectors follow standing rules. They never log into anything, never bypass a paywall or an access control, and never collect from private accounts or messages. Job descriptions are carried verbatim from the employer's own posting, and event dates and times are carried as the venue published them. When a source goes quiet, the content that came from it expires or unpublishes rather than lingering as stale information. And when a business owner claims their page, what they write replaces anything a crawler gathered.

That standard runs both ways. BerksConnect is itself a public website, and we allow verified third-party crawlers to read it: search engines, AI systems, and other well-behaved bots that identify themselves and read at reasonable rates. We want what is published here to be useful wherever people look things up, including AI assistants. What we work hard to block is malicious automation: scrapers that hammer the site, probe for weaknesses, or harvest content to impersonate or spam. That protection keeps the site fast for actual visitors and keeps our own measurements of what people read meaningful.

What People Do

People run BerksConnect. We set the rules every automated system works under, review what it produces, and fix what is wrong. Some content is reviewed item by item before it publishes; the rest runs under written rules we monitor and adjust. The news desk operates under standards anyone can read, and business owners control the content of their claimed pages.

What AI and Payment Never Change

Paying us never changes facts, review summaries, ratings, or news coverage; what paid plans buy and never buy is documented in our Advertising Disclosure and Editorial Policy. We do not use AI to impersonate people, to generate fake reviews or endorsements, or to depict real events that did not happen.

AI Makes Mistakes

AI-generated and AI-maintained content can be wrong: a summary can miss context, a description can go stale, a detail can be misread from a source.
