The towns and main streets of Berks County

West Reading is the county's most walkable afternoon: Penn Avenue runs about ten blocks of restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, murals, and ice cream, and you can park once and wander. Reading holds the big-city pieces next door: GoggleWorks, the Santander Arena, the museums, and the Pagoda watching from Mount Penn.

The smaller main streets each have their own draw. Hamburg pairs canal-town storefronts and the Strand theater with one of the state's biggest outdoor retailers off Interstate 78. Kutztown is a college town with Pennsylvania Dutch roots. Boyertown puts the antique vehicle museum and the Colebrookdale Railroad's station a short walk apart. And Wyomissing carries the county's shopping corridor, from Broadcasting Square to the Penn Avenue shops.

Where to eat in Berks County

Berks County eats like nowhere else in Pennsylvania. This is Pennsylvania Dutch country, so the table runs to chicken pot pie, shoofly pie, and scrapple, and the Deitsch Eck in Lenhartsville still cooks it the old way. Reading is the Pretzel City, and its Latino food corridor serves some of the state's best Puerto Rican and Dominican cooking: mofongo, chicharron, and bakery cases worth the drive on their own.

The institutions hold the other end. The Peanut Bar downtown has had shells on the floor for a century, Stokesay Castle serves dinner in a 1931 castle above the city, and the Reading Liederkranz pours German beer under the trees. The guides below are researched from the directory, name real places, and stay current.

Planning a Berks County trip

What is Berks County known for?
Pretzels, Pennsylvania Dutch farm country, the Reading Pagoda, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, the world’s first refuge for birds of prey. Five historic covered bridges still cross the county’s creeks, and Reading’s food scene blends Pennsylvania Dutch cooking with one of the state’s best Latino dining corridors.
What is the best time of year to visit Berks County?
Every season has a headliner: spring farm markets, summer fairs and Fightin Phils baseball, fall foliage and the hawk migration on the Blue Mountain ridge, and the holiday season at Koziar’s Christmas Village. The events calendar shows what is on this week.
Is Berks County a good day trip from Philadelphia?
Yes. Reading is about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia, roughly an hour and a quarter by car, and a single day comfortably fits an attraction, a walkable downtown like West Reading, and dinner. Start with things to do and where to eat.
Where are the covered bridges in Berks County?
Five historic covered bridges survive, including Wertz’s Red Bridge near the Berks County Heritage Center, the longest single-span covered bridge in Pennsylvania. Country roads link them through the Oley Valley and the northern townships, an easy self-guided driving loop.
What should we do in Berks County with kids?
The classics: Crystal Cave, the Reading Public Museum and its planetarium, a Fightin Phils game at FirstEnergy Stadium, and the Reading Science Center downtown. Our things to do guide keeps the full list.
Where are the farmers markets in Berks County?
All over the county, and they are a way of life here. The Leesport Farmers Market and the indoor Fairgrounds Farmers Market near Reading anchor the scene, with orchards and farm stands like Weaver’s Orchard and Way-Har Farm Market spread through the countryside. Browse them all under farm stands and markets.
Where should we stay in Berks County?
