Hillbilly BBQ in Douglassville.

Order the brisket sandwich and add the jalapeño sausage. Hillbilly runs both a truck and a restaurant at 908 Benjamin Franklin Highway in Douglassville, so this is one you can plan a Tuesday around.

The meat is what reviewers write about. "The meats were tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly," one wrote. Another was blunt about the sausage: "I LOVED the jalapeno sausage." A third on the sauce: "Best bbq sauce I've had in a very long time."

Price comes up too. One reviewer priced a smoked pulled pork combo with sides and a soda against a double Quarter Pounder and came out ahead. The catering side runs to full holiday meals, and one customer described a Thanksgiving spread that arrived seasoned and homemade.

Get the ribs and a side of Mexican street corn. Los Gios smokes like a barbecue truck and seasons like a taqueria, and the combination is what customers write about.

"Best ribs this side of the Mississippi," one reviewer put it. Three separate reviewers name the Mexican street corn, one of them calling it creamy, cheesy and their favorite side. The smoked wings get described as falling off the bone with a balanced heat.

It is family owned and customers say so unprompted, one of them writing that they loved supporting a small family owned business. The catering evidence is strong too: one reviewer called a company party there one of the best catering experiences they had had.

Los Gios LLC

Victory BBQ, smoked meats and collard greens.

Smoked meats, and do not skip the greens. "Tremendous brisket! Wings and pork were fantastic!" one reviewer wrote, while another said the collard greens were easily the best they had eaten.

Two things beyond the meat come up. One reviewer calls the sauces handmade. So are the cookies, which one customer described as home cooked and warm.

Catering shows up in its reviews too. One family used it for a graduation party and described the whole crew as professional and courteous.

Wood fired barbecue from a Fleetwood address, with mac and cheese that reviewers treat as a co-headliner rather than a side. One wrote that you can tell it is homemade. Another had not had a better brisket.

Where it parks changes week to week, so its own Facebook page is the thing to check before you drive out.

Blue Kraken BBQ

The Messy Pig BBQ Company in Womelsdorf.

Smoked meat sandwiches out of Womelsdorf, plus a sauce rack that is half the point. One reviewer counted a rack of sauces and said guests could take whichever they liked.

The pierogies have their own following. "We instantly fell in love with the pierogies," one wrote, and the corn nuggets get named right alongside them.

Couples who booked it for weddings describe a setup and teardown they did not have to think about, and personal touches during the day that they still wrote about afterward.

Order the cheesesteak and the Munchiez fries, then ask what The Gizzy is. "The cheesesteak is out of this world!!" one reviewer wrote, and another described bread so soft and fresh it felt made to order.

The fries have their own fan club. One couple admitted to eating there twice in a single day because of them. As for The Gizzy, one reviewer put it this way: "The Gizzy hit the spot! No photo because I didn't want to put the sandwich down."

Munchiez Food Truck

Burgers, fries, pierogies and fried cheese curds, from an operation that also caters weddings and large events. One reviewer said the fries tasted like the ones their mother used to make, and finished the thought this way: "the cheeseburger was the best I have ever had!"

The catering evidence is specific. One couple had it feed 150 guests on what may have been the coldest day of the year, and another described building a custom menu across several styles of burgers, fries and pierogies.

Salvadoran, at 245 Buttonwood Street in Reading. Bring cash: it is cash and Cash App only, which is worth knowing before you go.

Get the pupusas. "The best pupusas I've ever had in my life. Flavorful, filling, savory, and delicious!" one reviewer wrote, and another kept it local: "Best pupusas in Reading for sure!" The birria tacos draw the same reaction, and one reviewer names the horchata and the watermelon juice.

One reviewer describes it as a family operation.

El Guanaco Food Truck

Pip and Lily's Loaded Tots, buffalo chicken and garlic parmesan.

Loaded tater tots, where the toppings are the entire menu. "Best tots ever!!!" one reviewer wrote. Another described them as perfectly crispy and loaded with unique toppings.

Two reviewers name the garlic parmesan tots, and the buffalo chicken, mac and cheese and barbecue brisket versions each get named once. Lines move: one customer said they had their food before they had put their money away.

Several Berks County food trucks are the mobile arm of a storefront.

Not every truck here started as a truck. Several of these names are shops you already drive past, running a second kitchen on wheels, so when the truck is somewhere else there is still a room with their name on it.

Sweet Ride Ice Cream in West Reading.

Hand dipped ice cream on Penn Avenue in West Reading, in a room done as a 1950s parlor, and a truck that gets booked for birthdays. One reviewer described booking, planning and running an event with them as flawless from start to finish.

The banana pudding flavor has its own converts, one reviewer saying no store bought ice cream compares to it. Another noticed the waffle cones from the sidewalk before they got to the door.

Pop's Malt Shoppe in Kutztown.

A 1950s malt shop on West Main Street in Kutztown: burgers, fries, shakes and ice cream, with kid meals that arrive in cardboard cars. Pop's works off site as well, so check its own page for where the truck will be.

One reviewer recommended taking the ice cream in a hand made waffle cone. Another said the bacon mac and cheese burger was cooked to perfection.

A restaurant on East Penn Avenue in Robesonia that also runs a truck, with tacos and empanadas on the mobile end and a separate snack bus doing Mexican street snacks and elote.

The house salsa is made fresh daily, per one reviewer, and the homemade hot sauce gets named alongside it. Another pair of diners shared the Casa Fajitas, steak, chicken, carnitas, chorizo and shrimp, and recommended it for two.

The pizzeria sits on Penn Avenue in West Reading. The truck is a wood fired oven built into a 1956 Chevy Apache, and per its own site it is private catering only, based on four hours, with a $1,750 food and beverage minimum plus a $250 setup and breakdown fee.

At the restaurant, one reviewer called the margherita the best they had had in West Reading and ate the whole pie themselves. Another called a turkey, bacon and avocado panini with tomato pesto astounding.

Some trucks are less about a lunch window and more about showing up at a field day or a company picnic.

Coffee, breakfast bowls, pancake dippers and chai, from a truck that gets hired for retreats, client days and company events. One customer wrote that they arrived on time and set up.

The iced lattes come up more than once, and one host said all of their guests enjoyed the food truck experience. Another said the team stayed in touch through the whole run up to the event.

Shaved ice, and what we have on it is about events rather than a lunch line: a dance recital after party and a track and field invitational. One customer booked on short notice, found them more than helpful, and said the operator was willing to work around their schedule.

Where the food trucks are in Berks County this fall.

Berks has no standalone food truck festival this fall. The Exeter Food Truck Festival, the one event built around trucks alone, ran on Friday, May 15, 2026, so the fall calendar carries trucks inside other events instead.

The series runs Friday evenings from 4pm to 7pm at Maidencreek Community Park in Blandon. The next one the township has posted is Friday, September 4.

Berks County markets and venues where trucks park.

  • Truck N Brew at Willow Glen Park, 94 Park Avenue in Sinking Spring, is a food truck venue that opens only on the dates it publishes, for special events and private parties. It runs a free open air concert series Thursday through Sunday in the fall. Its own site carries the dated schedule and names its resident trucks, so check there before you go.
  • West Reading Farmers' Market, Sundays from 10am; check the borough's page for the season's last date.
  • Antietam Valley Farmers' and Artists' Market in Pennside, on Mondays from 5pm to 7pm: September 7 and 21, October 5 and 19, and November 2.

The Berks County wineries and beer gardens that host food trucks.

Setter Ridge Vineyards outside Kutztown usually has a truck on site, and its reviewers treat it as part of the visit. Check the winery's own page before you go. "There is also a food truck with smoking BBQ meats, coleslaw, and potatoes salad," one wrote, and another summed up a Sunday in a list: dog friendly, food truck, live music.

How to find a Berks County food truck this week.

Start with the Facebook group. There is no Berks food truck association, and no app that tracks where a Berks truck will be on a given night: the state's trade groups cover Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and northeastern Pennsylvania, and none of them cover here. What works instead is a short and boring routine you run on a Thursday.

  • The "Food Trucks Around Berks County" Facebook group. Its own description invites operators to post where they will be and event organizers to post when they need a truck. It is the closest thing the county has to a live countywide feed.
  • The BCTV community calendar. Berks Community Television runs a moderated countywide calendar that carries festivals, markets and borough events across the county.
  • The trucks' own Facebook and Instagram pages, checked Thursday or Friday. Unglamorous, and genuinely how this works here.
  • Venue calendars rather than truck calendars. Truck N Brew publishes a dated schedule, and the vineyard rotations show up on the county calendar.
  • Berks County Parks and Recreation's Facebook page, which posts truck appearances at county park events.

That routine is the exact problem this directory exists to solve, which is why every truck named above has a profile here carrying its phone number, instead of a phone number you have to dig out of a feed. What it takes to run a food truck in Berks County.

Every mobile kitchen in Pennsylvania needs a Mobile Food Facility permanent retail license from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, which defines the category as mobile units including food trucks, stick stands, carts and other similar structures that are mobile or transitory by design. The governing law is the Retail Food Facility Safety Act at 3 Pa.C.S. sections 5701 to 5714, and it requires a license for each facility. Under 7 Pa. Code Chapter 46, Pennsylvania adopts the FDA Model Food Code.

Per the department's own application materials, a new license runs $103 for an owner operated facility under 50 seats and $241 otherwise, renewal is $82 a year, and plan review is free. The same packet says to apply at least 60 days before opening, allows 15 business days for review, requires an opening inspection before you serve, and tells applicants to plan on four to six weeks.

Since January 22, 2011, every licensed food facility in the state has needed at least one worker holding an accredited food manager certificate. Under 7 Pa. Code section 46.1201 that person must be available during all hours of operation and the certificate posted in public view. New facilities get 90 days to sort it.

One point the department is explicit about: the state license does not carry across to local health departments. The department's own materials say there is no reciprocity and that most local health departments will not accept it.

Who inspects a food truck depends on where it parks in Berks County.

Berks County has no county health department, which is why the answer moves with the truck. Per the department's jurisdiction list, Reading City, Muhlenberg Township and Birdsboro Borough each run their own inspection programs, and everywhere else in the county falls to the state's Region 7 office in Collegeville. A truck in Kutztown is inspected by the state. The same truck parked in Reading is inspected by the city.

In the City of Reading, a mobile vendor health permit costs $300 and requires liability insurance, a city business privilege license, and a ServSafe certificate if you sell non-packaged food. The Mobile Vendors Ordinance is Chapter 453, Part 3, sections 453-301 to 453-313. Since an amendment on April 25, 2022, mobile vending is permitted across the city rather than by district, but it is confined to the public right-of-way and prohibited on private property, and hours run 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

West Reading's Chapter 418 is the most detailed of the three ordinances we read: hours of 8am to 11pm, no mobile vendors in residential districts, no more than two per block, 50 feet from another truck, 25 feet from a similar restaurant's door without written permission, size limits, no dining area, a state license as a precondition, and $1 million in insurance naming the borough. Kutztown's Chapter 206 requires a transient retail business license from the borough police department, valid for 30 days, with ServSafe for food vendors, and exempts vendors at borough authorized events including the fairgrounds.

On the tax side, a sales tax license is required and registration now runs through the Department of Revenue's myPATH system. Inspection results are publicly searchable on the state food safety portal, with the caveat that Reading City, Muhlenberg and Birdsboro inspections may not appear there.
