Skateaway

Skateaway is a roller skating rink located at 2275 Lancaster Pike in Shillington, Pennsylvania, serving the greater Berks County area. The facility operates as a recreational venue where visitors can engage in roller skating during public sessions, participate in organized events, and host private celebrations. As a longstanding establishment in the region, Skateaway has served multiple generations of local families, with many current patrons recalling visits during their own childhoods before returning with their children.

Facility and Services

The rink operates as a full-service roller skating facility offering several distinct programs and activities. Public skating sessions allow visitors of all ages to use the rink during designated hours, with skate rentals available for those who do not own their own equipment. The facility maintains a concrete skating surface, which differs from the wood or sport court flooring found at some other rinks.

Skateaway offers structured skating classes designed primarily for children, providing instruction from trained staff members who work with beginners learning fundamental skating techniques. These lessons typically run for extended periods, allowing young skaters ample practice time following instruction. The teaching approach emphasizes patience and encouragement, making the classes suitable for children who may be apprehensive about learning a new physical skill.

The facility hosts various themed events and activities throughout the week, creating different experiences for different audiences. These scheduled programs provide families with multiple opportunities to visit and participate in organized activities beyond standard open skating sessions.

Birthday Parties and Private Events

Private event hosting represents a significant component of Skateaway's operations. The facility offers birthday party packages that include rink access, party room space, and food service. Party packages typically include pizza and beverages for guests, with dedicated staff members coordinating the event logistics. The party coordination process involves setup, food service timing, and ensuring the celebrating group has access to necessary amenities throughout their reserved time.

Party packages are designed to accommodate groups of varying sizes, making the venue suitable for children's birthday celebrations of different scales. The combination of active skating time with a designated party area allows hosts to structure events with both recreational activity and traditional celebration elements like cake and presents.

Food Service

Skateaway operates an on-site snack bar or concession area where visitors can purchase food and beverages during their skating sessions. The menu includes pizza, which has developed a positive reputation among regular visitors. For a recreational facility where food service is secondary to the main attraction, the quality of the pizza offering has become a notable aspect of the overall experience for many patrons. Additional snack and beverage options are available for purchase during public sessions.

Accessibility Features

The facility has implemented accessibility accommodations to serve visitors with mobility challenges. Skateaway provides wheelchair accessible parking spaces in its lot, a wheelchair accessible entrance to the building, and wheelchair accessible restroom facilities. These features allow individuals using wheelchairs or other mobility devices to access the facility, though the nature of roller skating as an activity presents inherent limitations for participation by individuals with certain physical disabilities.

Practical Information

Skateaway is situated on Lancaster Pike, a major thoroughfare in Shillington that provides convenient access from surrounding communities in Berks County. The facility maintains a paid parking lot on the premises, eliminating the need for street parking or off-site arrangements. Visitors can reach the facility by telephone at 610-777-4000 for information about session times, pricing, party bookings, and special events.

Payment options at Skateaway include debit cards, providing flexibility for visitors who prefer electronic payment methods over cash transactions. This applies to admission fees, skate rentals, concession purchases, and party package payments.

Staff and Customer Service

The operational staff at Skateaway handles multiple responsibilities including admission processing, skate rental fitting, rink supervision, party coordination, and concession service. Staff members assist visitors with skate selection and fitting, provide guidance to new skaters, and maintain supervision of the skating floor during sessions. The facility's approach to customer service extends to handling situations when skaters fall or experience minor injuries, with staff providing assistance and first aid supplies as needed.

For birthday parties and private events, designated staff members manage the coordination process, ensuring that food service, room setup, and timing align with the host's expectations. This coordination role involves communication with party organizers before and during events to address questions and accommodate specific requests.

Community Role

Roller skating rinks have historically served as social gathering places for young people and families, and Skateaway continues this tradition in the Shillington area. The facility provides a recreational option that encourages physical activity while offering a social environment distinct from team sports or individual fitness activities. For many local families, the rink represents a multigenerational tradition, with parents and grandparents who skated at the facility now bringing younger family members for similar experiences.

The variety of programming, including classes, public sessions, and private events, allows Skateaway to serve different segments of the community. Skating lessons introduce children to the activity in a structured learning environment, while public sessions provide ongoing recreational opportunities for those who have already developed skating skills. The facility's role as a party venue positions it as a destination for milestone celebrations within the community.

Operating Model

Skateaway operates on an admission-based model where visitors pay for access to skating sessions. Skate rental is available for an additional fee for those who do not bring their own equipment. The facility schedules different session types throughout the week, potentially including sessions targeted at specific age groups or skill levels, as well as general public skating times open to all ages.

The skating lesson program operates on a separate fee structure, with per-session pricing that includes instruction time and practice skating. This program provides an entry point for beginners who may feel more comfortable learning in a class setting before participating in general public sessions.

Party packages bundle multiple services into a single price, typically including admission for a specified number of guests, party room rental, food and beverages, and coordination assistance. This bundled approach simplifies event planning for hosts while providing predictable revenue for the facility.
