Wheels For Change Donated Cars for Families in Berks County
Wheels For Change is a program of The Rudden Family Foundation, also called Rudden Family Services, that takes donated vehicles, repairs them and places them with a person or family living in poverty in Berks County.
The foundation accepts reliable vehicle donations no matter the age of the vehicle. It inspects each one and fixes any minor repairs needed. It then works with one of its 20 community partners in Berks County to identify a person or family living in poverty who can put the vehicle to good use.
A car is not handed over for nothing. The recipient pays a nominal purchase price and then pays for their own insurance and maintenance. The page does not say how much the purchase price is, so ask.
Recipients are found through the foundation's community partners, so the way in is through an agency you already work with in Berks County. The page does not say how a person can ask to be considered directly, what documents are needed, how long the wait is, or whether there is a list.
For questions, the foundation's general contact is 16 Pacific Avenue, Reading, PA 19608-9788, phone (610) 207-9257, with email at joe.rudden@trffoundation.org or kevin.rudden@trffoundation.org. This is the foundation's contact address; the page does not say that vehicles are inspected, applied for or picked up there, and it does not give office hours.
Recipients of goods send a handwritten letter to express their gratitude to the donor or sponsor.

The details
In The Rudden Family Foundation’s words
No matter the age, we accept reliable vehicle donations. We give the donor FULL FAIR MARKET VALUE as a tax deduction for their donated vehicle. RFS inspects and fixes any minor repairs needed. Then we work with one of our 20 community partners in Berks County to identify a person or family living in poverty who can put it to good use. The recipient pays a nominal purchase price, their own insurance and maintenance. This is another step toward self-sufficiency and another step out of poverty.
