Borrow Assistive Technology From TechOWL's Lending Library

TechOWL runs a statewide assistive technology lending library that lets you borrow a device and try it out before deciding whether it is right for you. TechOWL is Pennsylvania's designated Assistive Technology Act (AT Act) Program, part of the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University.

The lending library provides over 1500 devices that anyone in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania can use, so Berks County residents are eligible. Borrowing is described as free: "Try assistive technology, for free!" TechOWL also offers free demonstrations and consultations to help in the trial process.

To borrow, go to the online catalog. From the Borrow page at techowlpa.org/library, the "Go to the Library" link opens the catalog at myatprogram.org/home/42. You add lending library items to your cart and check out. If it is your first visit, you will need to create an account first. TechOWL uses NATADS, a national database used by assistive technology programs. The Borrow page also links to Detailed Borrowing Instructions as a PDF and to a Frequently Asked Questions section, and it lets you suggest a new library item.

Mobility devices are part of the collection and may include canes, crutches, scooters, rollators, wheelchairs, and more. These are available for in-person pick up only, and they are listed as Mobility Devices in Philadelphia.

For questions, TechOWL's general contact number is 800-204-7428 and its general email is techowl@temple.edu. The main office is at 1301 Cecil B. Moore Ave., Ritter Annex Room 430, Philadelphia, PA 19122, and office hours there are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. TechOWL also has a Community Space at 1392 Cecil B. Moore Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19122, open Monday 10 am to 2 pm, Tuesday 1 pm to 5 pm, Wednesday 10 am to 2 pm and Thursday 1 pm to 5 pm; those hours are subject to change, and other hours are by appointment by emailing techowl@temple.edu.

There are few other details. The page does not say how long you may keep an item, how many items you may borrow at once, whether items other than mobility devices are shipped to you, or where in Berks County you would pick up or return a device, so ask when you contact TechOWL.
