Borrow Assistive Technology Free From TechOWL's Lending Library
TechOWL runs Pennsylvania's Assistive Technology Lending Library, a statewide device loan program that lets you borrow a device and try it out before deciding whether it is right for you.
Anyone in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania can use the library, so Berks County residents qualify. TechOWL describes the lending library as holding over 1500 devices, and the Borrow page states "Try assistive technology, for free!"
Most device loans are for five weeks, except for iPads and Chromebooks, which may be borrowed for nine weeks. You are asked to limit your selection to no more than 3 devices, which helps keep more items available for other people who want to borrow. You can choose to have 1, 2 or all 3 devices sent to you at a time.
To borrow, use the online catalog. From the Borrow page at techowlpa.org/library, the "Go to the Library" link opens the catalog at myatprogram.org/home/42, which runs on NATADS, a national database used by assistive technology programs. Use the "View Items for Loan" button to browse the equipment catalog. To place a request you need to log in or register for an account, then add lending library items to your cart and check out. If it is your first visit, you will need to create an account. You are also asked to list someone other than yourself as an alternate contact for the loan, someone TechOWL can contact if it cannot reach you.
After you click the Submit button, a Notes section appears. If you are borrowing an iPad, enter the names of the apps you want there. You can also use the Notes section to say whether you want the devices sent together or as they become available, or to add other important information, such as a change in shipping address.
Mobility devices are part of the collection and may include canes, crutches, scooters, rollators, wheelchairs and more. These are available for in-person pick up only, in Philadelphia.
The Borrow page also links to Detailed Borrowing Instructions as a PDF and to Frequently Asked Questions, and it has a form to suggest a new library item.
