Safe Overnight Parking for People Living in Their Cars in Berks County
The Berks Coalition to End Homelessness runs a Safe Parking Lot, a designated lot where people experiencing homelessness can park their cars overnight safely and legally, which helps reduce the risk of crime and violence.
The lot has a locked gate to prevent unauthorized access and plenty of safety lights. The address is only shared with those in need of this resource, so you will not find it posted publicly.
Along with a place to park, the Berks County Safe Parking Lot offers other amenities, such as restrooms, hygiene products, and a phone charging station. People living in their cars can also get case management and connection to resources at BCEH.

The BCEH office is at 600 Penn St in Reading, on the third floor, and is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 3:30pm, with walk-ins accepted until 3pm. The ZIP code is listed two different ways on the site, 19601 and 19602, so confirm it when you call. The office is closed on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, President's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving Friday and Christmas Day, and closes at noon the day before New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Those are the office hours, not the hours of the lot itself. The page does not say what hours the lot is open, how many spaces there are, whether there is any cost, or what to bring, so ask when you call.
