Find a Lawyer Through the Berks County Bar Association
The Berks County Bar Association's Lawyer Referral Service matches a person who needs a lawyer with an attorney in Berks County who handles their kind of legal problem, such as a foreclosure complaint on a home, a request to change a child custody arrangement, an eviction from an apartment, or bankruptcy.
The attorneys on the lawyer referral panel must be licensed and actively engaged in the practice of law in Berks County. They must be in good standing with the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and act in compliance with the Pennsylvania Rules of Professional Conduct. The association does not directly employ attorneys and does not provide free legal advice; what it does is match you with an attorney who is conveniently located and qualified to handle your specific legal matter.
There are two ways to start. You can fill out the client referral form at berksbar.org/?pg=clientreferrals, which asks for your name, a phone number or email, a description of your legal issue, and the panel category that best matches it, such as Bankruptcy Law, Family Law, Landlord Tenant Law, Criminal Defense Law or Estate Planning/Elder Law. The form also lets you say your preferred language, choose how far you are willing to travel to an attorney, and ask for an attorney with additional language proficiency, including ASL, Cambodian, French, German, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian. Or you can call the Lawyer Referral Service during business hours, Monday through Friday, at 610-375-4591. The Find a Lawyer page also lists an appointment option at 544 Court Street, Reading, PA 19601.
The office at 544 Court Street is open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A parking garage is available in the 600 block of Court St. on the right. For general questions, the association's office number is 610-375-4591 and its general email is info@berksbar.org.
What a referral costs and what the attorney will charge are not stated, so ask about fees when you are matched.
If you feel you cannot afford an attorney, the page points to MidPenn Legal Services, 35 N. 6th Street, Mezz. Suite 101, Reading, PA 19601, which may assign an attorney at no fee. Call MidPenn at 1-800-326-9177 for an appointment to determine your eligibility. The association also runs a separate Modest Means Program for people whose income is above legal aid limits.
