Free Immigration Legal Help in Reading From Community Justice Project
Community Justice Project (CJP) runs an immigration legal practice out of its Reading, PA office, and its immigration team is fully bilingual in English and Spanish. The team represents clients applying for immigration petitions, and CJP provides free legal representation for low-income people.
The petitions the team handles include:
- Citizenship (naturalization), the process for green card holders (permanent residents) to apply to become U.S. citizens. The team assists with both the N-400 citizenship application and, for applicants who are under the poverty line, the fee waiver application.
- DACA renewal, helping Dreamers renew their Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals paperwork.
- Green card renewal, for green card holders who need to renew every 10 years. A fee waiver is available and the team helps with both the I-90 form and the fee waiver.
- Work permit renewal. There are many different categories of work permits, and what the team can do depends on the situation.
- VAWA, an immigration application under the Violence Against Women Act for victims of violence who are married to a U.S. citizen or a green card holder and are experiencing abuse. It also includes immigrants suffering abuse from U.S. citizen children who are over the age of 21.
- U-Visa, a visa for victims of violence who cooperate with the criminal justice process. The team assists with seeking U-Visa certifications and with submitting U-Visa applications.
To qualify, you must be income-eligible for legal aid services, which usually means your income is within 187% of the federal poverty limit, depending on family size. CJP does not handle Philadelphia-area cases and asks people in that area to contact a legal aid organization in Philadelphia. It also does not handle divorce, family custody, estate, bankruptcy, foreclosure, real estate or criminal matters.
