This weekend workshop at GoggleWorks introduces sand casting, a long standing way of shaping metal. Participants pack molds using casting sand, then pour molten metal to make jewelry or small sculptural objects. The two sessions cover mold making, pouring, and finishing and polishing, and students take home their finished cast pieces.
The class is open to teens and adults ages 14 and up, at all skill levels, so no metalworking background is needed. Instructor Lukas Kohler leads the work in the Metalsmithing Studio in Building 6 on the GoggleWorks campus at 201 Washington St in Reading. Closed-toe shoes are required for studio safety.
The workshop meets Friday and Saturday from 6 PM to 9 PM, on October 16 and 17. Registration is handled on the GoggleWorks class page, and sign ups close five business days before the start date so the instructor can prepare. GoggleWorks notes that scholarships are available and that the campus is accessible; add a note at registration if there is anything that would help your experience.
