You don't need a particular employer to join a credit union in Berks County. Two of the credit unions with offices here take anybody who lives, works, worships or goes to school in the county, so if that's you, you already qualify at both. At the other ones you get in through your job, through a relative who already belongs, or through a consumer group you can join yourself.

That third one surprises people. Most of us picked up somewhere that credit unions belong to teachers or one big plant's workers, and stopped asking. Our page for banks and credit unions in the county puts those branches in one place.

Which credit unions in Berks County will take you.

Two of them take you on the strength of your address. Riverfront Federal Credit Union says you qualify if you live, work, worship or attend school here, and it counts close family, your household, and a business or organization operating in the county.

Pagoda Federal Credit Union publishes the same tests and takes businesses and other legal entities too.

The others ask for more, and at a few the test is your exact street address, because the area they cover is smaller than the county.

The table below is what each one publishes about who can join and what it asks as a deposit, not every detail. Look for your own row and stop when you find it.

Ten of the credit unions with a Berks County office, in their own published words, read in September 2026. At most of them the money is a deposit into a savings account in your name. Listed alphabetically.

Two rows fitting you is normal, so apply to whichever has an office you'd drive to. Their offices are on our county credit unions page.

How your job or a relative gets you in.

Your job is the way in most of us have heard of. Reading Berks School Employees Credit Union takes anybody employed by a Berks County school district, not only teachers, and describes its members as people associated with all of the county's districts. If you work at a district through a contractor, that's a question for the credit union.

Most of them count family too, and the list is wider than people expect: stepfamily, in-laws, foster and adoptive relationships, and anyone living in the same household.

So if somebody in your family already belongs somewhere, you may be eligible there today. Visions Federal Credit Union takes anyone whose parent or sibling is already a member, wherever that relative lives.

Members 1st Federal Credit Union is the biggest name on the list. It has offices in Reading and Sinking Spring, and living in Berks County isn't enough by itself. Its own answer is that your employer, organization, school or church needs to be signed up with it, and that if that isn't the case, you must be a relative of somebody who's already a member. Those two are the ways in, and it says to call or visit if you aren't sure which one is yours, so start with the call.

Can any Pennsylvania resident join a credit union?

Several of these credit unions say yes, through a consumer group you can join yourself. It isn't a flat yes, so read the group's own terms before you pay anybody. Utilities Employees Credit Union names the Pennsylvania Consumer Council on its own eligibility page, and it also takes anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in what it calls the Greater Reading Area, so ask whether your address is inside it.

Diamond Credit Union names the same council, and First Commonwealth Federal Credit Union and Sun Federal Credit Union name its national parent, the American Consumer Council. Joining the group makes you eligible at the credit unions affiliated with it, and you still have to meet that credit union's own requirements.

Open to any Pennsylvania resident is how some of the credit unions describe the group. Its own bylaws list more than that: proof you live in the United States, a major purchase you made with a warranty in the last three years or a low income, and dues.

Individual lifetime membership runs $15 on the group's own join form, as of 2026. A credit union can also enroll you itself when it approves your membership, and Sun Federal Credit Union calls that a complimentary membership.

What to bring when you apply, and whether you can do it online.

What you bring is the same as at a bank. Federal law makes every bank and credit union collect your name, address, date of birth and an identifying number before it opens an account, so in practice that's a driver's license or state identification card, your Social Security number, and a way to make the first deposit. Discovery Federal Credit Union publishes exactly that list.

You can do almost all of it from a phone or a laptop. Nearly every credit union on the list takes a membership application online, and a couple of them say it takes about five minutes. Reading Berks School Employees Credit Union is the one that works on paper: it asks you into the office for a membership card and application, with a copy of your Social Security card.

If the identification is the part you're worried about, ask. First Commonwealth Federal Credit Union says on its own membership page that it accepts the Matricula Consular Card of Mexico and the Dominican Republic's Cédula Card, and that the towns it lists are examples, not the full list. For doing all of this in Spanish, Spanish-language services in Berks County is where to start.

For a business account, the list is different, and what a Berks County business account takes walks through that one.

What joining costs, and what the deposit gets you.

The money you put in to join doesn't buy you a checking account. It goes into a savings account in your name, and being a member is what lets you open anything else. Most of them say so themselves: a membership starts with the savings account. Diamond Credit Union adds that once yours is established you have access to everything it offers.

That deposit is what credit unions call a share, and holding one makes you a member instead of a customer. So the order goes: you join, your money sits in savings, then you ask for the checking account or the car loan you came in for.

Joining isn't free everywhere: a credit union's board is allowed to require an entrance fee on top of the deposit. Reading Berks School Employees Credit Union publishes a $1 membership fee and a $25 savings deposit, so $26 on the first day.

Once you're in, you get one vote at the annual meeting, however much money you keep there. If your credit union is federally insured, and that's worth asking, your savings are covered up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration, the federal agency that insures money in credit unions. You don't apply for that; it comes with joining.

So pick the one you already qualify at and apply. Start from our list of the county's credit unions and go to that credit union's own join page. For everything near your address, the county's banks and credit unions is the wider list.

Questions people ask about joining a credit union in Berks County.

What happens if I move or change jobs?

Not much. Under federal law, once you're a member of a federal credit union you stay one until you choose to withdraw, and Pennsylvania law says the same for one set up under state law, as long as you haven't taken all your money out. Emptying the account can end it, though: a credit union may close a membership when somebody's savings drop below that first deposit.

Can a credit union turn me down?

It can. Qualifying gets you to the application; the credit union decides from there. If yours says no, ask which requirement you missed, and whether a relative's membership or a consumer group gets you in elsewhere.

What if no credit union covers my employer?

Ask one to sign it up. Members 1st Federal Credit Union publishes that process on its own site, at no cost and with no contract, and your employer doesn't have to be a member. That opens it for everybody you work with, not only you.
