Overview

Berks Youth Chorus is a premier non-profit organization based in Reading, Pennsylvania, dedicated to nurturing vocal talent and fostering a lifelong love for music among young singers. Since its inception in 1992, BYC has been committed to enriching the community through exceptional choral experiences and music education. Berks Youth Chorus offers a range of dynamic programs designed to engage young singers from grades 3 to 12. The organization hosts three distinct ensembles:

• Choristers: Tailored for grades 3-4, this ensemble focuses on building foundational singing skills and fostering a love for music.
• Chorale: Designed for singers in grades 5 and up, this group delves deeper into choral music, emphasizing both individual and collective musical growth.
• MasterSingers: Created for grades 8 and up, this advanced ensemble challenges young vocalists with a diverse repertoire and performance opportunities that enhance their artistic development.

In addition to traditional choral training, BYC has innovated its approach through the Chorus for Causes program. This initiative allows singers to engage in community advocacy by researching and selecting local causes to support each season. Experience/History

Founded by Donald Hinkle in 1992 as the Berks Classical Children’s Chorus, the organization has evolved significantly over the past three decades. Initially focused on classical repertoire, BYC has expanded its musical offerings to encompass a wide range of genres and cultural expressions. Throughout its history, Berks Youth Chorus has provided countless performance opportunities in various venues, including nursing homes, churches, concert halls, and hospitals.

Under the guidance of Mr. Hinkle, who served as Artistic Director until 2005, the chorus flourished, developing a strong reputation for musical excellence and community engagement. In 2012, the organization officially transitioned to the name Berks Youth Chorus, reflecting its broader mission and expanded services. The recent years have seen BYC adapt to challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic by incorporating virtual programming that emphasizes personal growth and leadership, further solidifying its commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians.
