The Boulder Field

The feature that gives Blue Rocks its identity is a periglacial boulder field, sometimes called a felsenmeer or block field. Geologists attribute these formations to the Pleistocene, when the region lay south of the continental ice sheet but endured repeated freeze and thaw cycles. Water worked into fractures in the Tuscarora quartzite of the ridge above, expanded as it froze, and gradually broke the bedrock apart. The resulting blocks crept downslope over thousands of years and came to rest as a river of stone that runs roughly a mile in length and several hundred feet in width in places.

The boulders range from the size of a suitcase to the size of a small vehicle. Because the field drains freely and holds almost no soil, trees and shrubs have never fully reclaimed it, which is why the stone remains exposed rather than buried under forest. Visitors can walk out onto the rocks, scramble across the larger blocks or simply view the field from its edges. Sturdy footwear with good ankle support is strongly advised, and hikers should be aware that the surface can be slick after rain and that gaps between boulders can be deep.

Two of the most visited overlooks in the region, Pulpit Rock and the Pinnacle, are within reach of day hikers starting from this area. The Pinnacle in particular is widely regarded as one of the finest viewpoints on the Pennsylvania section of the Appalachian Trail, offering a broad outlook over farmland in the valley below.

Routes vary considerably in difficulty. Shorter loops near the campground provide easy walking suitable for children and casual visitors, while the climbs to the ridge involve sustained elevation gain and long stretches of rocky footing that Pennsylvania is known for among long distance hikers. Trail runners also use the area, and the boulder field itself attracts those interested in rock scrambling. Hikers should carry water, a map and a headlamp for late returns, since cell service can be unreliable along the ridge.

Location and Surrounding Attractions

Kempton is a small village in Albany Township, roughly midway between Allentown and Hamburg, and within a reasonable drive of Reading, Bethlehem and the Interstate 78 corridor. The surrounding landscape is rural, with farms, wooded hillsides and back roads connecting the scattered settlements at the base of the mountain.

Nearby points of interest include Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, an internationally known raptor migration observation site a short drive to the west, where thousands of hawks, eagles and falcons pass each autumn. The Wanamaker, Kempton and Southern Railroad operates excursion trains from Kempton on a seasonal schedule. Hamburg, Lenhartsville and Kutztown provide groceries, restaurants, fuel and other services for campers who need to restock. The Schuylkill River and several state game lands parcels are also within driving distance.

Weather at the base of the ridge can differ noticeably from conditions in the valley towns, with cooler nights in spring and fall. Autumn is a popular period because of foliage and the hawk migration, and weekends during that stretch tend to fill quickly.
