What to do at Der Distelfink Statue

  • Take a 75 minute guided tour of the Gruber Wagon Works, a National Historic Landmark
  • Walk through the C. Howard Hiester Canal Center at your own pace
  • Cross Wertz's Covered Bridge and look at Melcher's Grist Mill
  • Visit Epler's One Room School House on a Saturday or Sunday
  • Picnic at the tables or browse the Country Store in the barn

The Distelfink is a six-foot painted sculpture of the stylized goldfinch from Pennsylvania German folk art, a motif the county's historic resource staff describe as a welcome sign that stands for good luck and good fortune. It was made by artist Ramon Lago in the mid 1980s and given to the county through the Berks County Arts Council. It stands on the grounds of the Berks County Heritage Center on Red Bridge Road in Bern Township, where it greets visitors near the entrance. The bird was repainted in 2006 and 2016, and in May 2025 it was cleaned, primed and repainted again by Eric Claypoole, Patrick Donmoyer and Andrew Shirk, with a rebuilt stone base and a new garden around it.

We treat the statue as a short stop inside a larger visit. The Heritage Center is a county historic park that also holds the Gruber Wagon Works, a National Historic Landmark, the C. Howard Hiester Canal Center, Wertz's Covered Bridge, Melcher's Grist Mill, the Deppen Cemetery, an herb garden, Mildred the houseboat and Epler's One Room School House. The lower level of the barn is the information center, with the Country Store and a snack bar, and restrooms and picnic tables are open year round.

The statue itself can be seen and photographed from the grounds. Guided tours of the wagon works leave on the hour during the season and take about 75 minutes, the canal center is self guided, and the schoolhouse opens on weekends with volunteers from its Friends group.
