The Schuylkill River Trail is a long-distance walking and biking trail that follows the river for about 120 miles from Frackville in Schuylkill County through Berks, Montgomery, and Chester counties to Philadelphia, with more than 80 miles open as paved or crushed-stone path. In Berks and Schuylkill counties the trail is built and managed by the Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area, which looks after roughly 35 miles here.

The Berks piece most of us use is the Thun Trail, a nearly 20-mile stretch from the Pottstown line up to Reading that volunteers maintain. North of the city the route to Hamburg is a signed on-road ride with a short off-road piece in Leesport, and from Hamburg the John B. Bartram Section runs seven miles to Auburn. In Reading the trailheads are at Riverfront Park (255 Riverfront Drive) and across the pedestrian bridge at 9 1st Avenue in West Reading, where the trail also links to the Wyomissing Trail and the paved Neversink Trail to Heritage Park.

We walk, run, bike, and ski it. The trail is open every day from sunrise to sunset, the speed limit is 15 mph, pets stay leashed, and there are no trash cans, so carry out what you carry in.
