Wyomissing Area School District (WASD) is a public school district in Berks County, Pennsylvania, with administrative offices located at 630 Evans Avenue in Wyomissing. The district serves students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 across three buildings, each organized around a specific grade band. Its attendance area covers the borough of Wyomissing and the borough of West Reading, both situated immediately west of the city of Reading.
The district operates as an equal opportunity institution and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, or handicap, consistent with the requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title IX of the Education Amendments, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. General inquiries can be directed to 610-374-0739, and district information is published at wyoarea.org.
Wyomissing Area School District traces its formation to a series of consolidations among smaller borough school systems during the 1960s. The Wyomissing and Wyomissing Hills school districts merged in 1962, and the combined entity was formally established as Wyomissing Area School District in 1966. West Reading completed its merger into the district in 1969, producing the three-borough configuration that shapes the district's present-day building assignments and attendance boundaries.
That history remains visible in the names of the district's elementary buildings, the Wyomissing Hills Elementary Center and the West Reading Elementary Center, both of which retain the identity of the communities from which they came.
Rather than operating neighborhood elementary schools serving the full K-6 range, WASD groups all students of a given age together in a single building. The configuration is as follows:
This structure means every student in the district moves through the same sequence of buildings, which supports consistent curriculum delivery across each grade level and allows specialized staff and resources to be concentrated by age group.
The district offers a Pre-K Counts program along with full kindergarten, and families register students through an online enrollment pathway. New and transferring students are handled by the district registration office, which also fields questions about required documentation, residency verification, and placement. Families relocating into Wyomissing or West Reading mid-year typically begin the process through the registration portal on the district website.
Curriculum development and instructional programming are overseen by the Teaching and Learning department, which organizes its work around the district's Comprehensive Plan and a set of published District Initiatives. These documents outline instructional priorities, assessment practices, and long-range goals, and they are made available to the public as part of the district's planning process.
For students whose circumstances call for an alternative to in-person attendance, the district operates Wyomissing Area Virtual Education, an online learning option administered directly by WASD rather than through an outside cyber charter. Library services are supported through the Follett Destiny catalog system, and students and staff have access to subscription research databases for coursework and independent study.
WASD competes interscholastically as the Wyomissing Spartans. The athletic program is led by Athletic Director Frank Ferrandino, reachable at extension 3311, and the district employs two certified athletic trainers who support practices, competitions, and injury management. Team schedules, rosters, and event information are hosted at wyospartans.org.
Competition and practice facilities include the Cambridge Avenue athletic complex and Bob Wolfrum Field. The Spartans program has long been a visible part of community life in the Wyomissing and West Reading boroughs, drawing spectators from across the district's small geographic footprint.
The district maintains dedicated health services and student services departments that address medical needs, counseling, special education coordination, and related supports. Mental health resources are offered in partnership with the Cook Center, giving students and families access to information and support services beyond what a school building alone typically provides.
WASD also participates in Safe2Say Something, Pennsylvania's anonymous safety tip reporting system. Students, families, and community members can use the program to report concerns about potential threats, self-harm, bullying, or other safety issues, with tips routed to trained crisis center staff and then to district and local officials.
Breakfast and lunch programs operate in all three district buildings, with monthly menus published in advance. Food Services is directed by Alexis Hohl, who can be reached at 610-374-0739 extension 1118, and each building, the Junior/Senior High School, West Reading Elementary Center, and Wyomissing Hills Elementary Center, has its own site coordinator.
Student busing is managed through the district transportation office, which handles route questions, stop assignments, and day-to-day transportation concerns. Inquiries are routed through the transportation contact listed on the district website.
Families and staff interact with several digital systems. PowerSchool serves as the student information system and grade portal, with the district code PQTZ used for account setup on mobile applications. Schoology functions as the learning management system where assignments and course materials are posted. ParentSquare handles district, school, and classroom communication, including announcements and direct messaging between families and staff. The Information Technology department, led by Chief Information Officer Scott Arnst at extension 1150, supports these platforms and maintains a public system status monitor so users can check for known outages.
The Facilities, Safety and Security department, directed by Mike Cafoncelli at 610-374-0739 extension 1140, oversees building maintenance, custodial work, grounds, HVAC, plumbing, and security operations. The same department administers community facility rentals, allowing outside organizations and residents to request use of district buildings and grounds through an online request system.
The Business Office manages district financial operations, including budget preparation, annual financial reporting, and responses to Right To Know requests submitted under Pennsylvania's open records law.
Human Resources handles hiring, employment verification, and benefits questions, with inquiries directed to Dr. Jessica Lengle at 610-374-0739. Substitute teaching positions are staffed through Kelly Education, reachable at 855-Kelly Ed, and paraprofessional positions are filled through ESS. Community members interested in supporting students and school events can apply through the district's online volunteer program, which includes the clearance process required of school volunteers in Pennsylvania.
