What to do at Wyomissing Park System Picnic Area

  • Walk Old Wyomissing Road from the Old Mill to the soccer fields past 18th century barns and Ruth's Bridge
  • Follow the 1.9 mile Creek Trail along the Wyomissing Creek
  • Climb the Summit Trail to the bench with a view across the borough to Slate Hill
  • Watch for great blue herons, kingfishers, and ducks on the creek and ponds
  • Fish the creek under Pennsylvania fishing laws (brown trout live here)
  • Link shorter loops on the Pinewoods, Winters Way, Cherry Lane, and Cedar trails

This is a Google Maps label for a stretch of the Parklands of Wyomissing along Old Wyomissing Road, not a named borough facility. The Parklands are the borough's open space and trail system, more than 350 acres of woods, meadows, and creek bottom that Ferdinand Thun bought in 1929 and that passed to the borough in the 1970s. The borough lists the system under the Parklands Open Space and Trail System at 1216 Parkside Drive North.

We come here to walk. Old Wyomissing Road between the Old Mill and the soccer fields was once part of the main road from Reading to Lancaster, and the borough's trail guide treats it as a history walk past 1730s barns, Ruth's Bridge from 1910, a spring house, and the Park Barn. Six marked trails branch off it: the Creek Trail (1.9 miles) follows the Wyomissing Creek on fairly level ground, and shorter paths such as the Summit Trail, Pinewoods Trail, Winters Way, Cherry Lane, and Cedar Trail climb into the woods and to an overlook bench.

The creek holds brown trout and painted turtles, and herons, kingfishers, and woodpeckers are around all year. There are several parking areas and information kiosks along the road. The borough's rental pavilions are at Happy Hollow and Wyomissing Hills playgrounds, not in this part of the Parklands.
