East Coast Karate brings its introductory session to the Yocum Institute for Arts Education in West Lawn, and it serves as the starting point for anyone new to the program. Every incoming student, from age 6 through adult, takes this one time class before joining the regular schedule, so newcomers get a clear look at how training works before committing to a section.
The traditional program works on mind, body, and spirit together. Students learn practical skills to protect themselves along with the confidence to use them, and the training builds focus, respect, self discipline, responsibility, and the kind of persistence that carries over into school, work, and daily life.
Come dressed in comfortable exercise clothes, long pants and a t-shirt, since participants train in bare feet. No uniform is needed for this first class. Instructors will talk with families and students about class placement and which weekday sections fit best, and those who continue can attend classes for the rest of the month.
