Emergency Rent, Utility and Car Help for Veterans From Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors
Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors pays emergency bills for veterans in crisis, covering things like rent, a housing security deposit, a mortgage payment, minor home repair, basic utilities such as gas, oil, electricity and water, and a car payment, car insurance or car repair. The group does not work directly with veterans and does not send funds to veterans. Payments go directly to the landlord or other creditor, and the request has to come from a veterans advocate.
To qualify, a veteran must answer yes to all of these: you have been a Pennsylvania resident for the 12 months before the request; you are a veteran of the United States Armed Forces with an Honorable or General Under Honorable Conditions Discharge, with General Honorable Discharges considered case by case; you served at least 15 months; and you have not received assistance from PAWW in the previous 12 months with an Honorable Discharge, or the previous 24 months with a General Under Honorable Conditions Discharge.
Some costs are not covered: credit cards and personal signature loans, taxes, fines, court-ordered payments and legal fees, vehicle purchases and major car repairs, medical expenses, education including tuition and childcare, appliances, and cable TV or streaming services. Phone and internet are considered case by case, with no cable TV.
Veterans start by contacting a local VA Medical Center or Clinic, a County Veterans Office or a similar veterans service agency. Bring these to your appointment: - Proof of Pennsylvania residency - DD 214/NGB22 discharge paperwork - Service-connected disability award letter, if you have one - Copies of the lease and other bills you need help with, showing addresses and account numbers - For car repair, car payment or car insurance, a driver's license, state car registration and proof of insurance
The veterans advocate decides on the best course of action and, if they choose to, sends the request to PAWW. Volunteers review the request with the caseworker, check that it meets the requirements and see whether funds are available. If PAWW can help, it sends payment to the landlord and creditors. In every case, volunteers tell the social worker and caseworker what was decided. Requests are reviewed daily.
Advocates submit requests in PDF format with a cover letter, proof of military service with DD 214/NGB22 preferred, and current copies of bills or the lease. Documents that are not in PDF form or are missing or incomplete will result in inaction and the whole request must be resubmitted. Requests are sent by fax to 717-260-3622, which is preferred, or by email to help@pawoundedwarriors.org.
PAWW does not accept requests an advocate makes for themselves, their co-workers or their volunteer staff, and does not accept requests from a nonprofit asking to be paid directly for services it is providing a veteran.
If an eviction or shutoff date has already passed or is less than 48 hours away, the advocate must confirm in the cover letter that they have spoken to the payee and that the payment will prevent the eviction or cutoff. Without that assurance, PAWW will not send a last minute payment.
