To qualify you must be a Pennsylvania homeowner or renter and meet one of the age rules: 65 and older, a widow or widower 50 and older, or a person with a disability 18 and older. Your household income must be $48,110 or less annually.

How much you get depends on your income. The standard rebate is $1,000 for income of $0 to $8,550, $770 for $8,551 to $16,040, $460 for $16,041 to $19,240, and $380 for $19,241 to $48,110.

Some applicants also receive a supplemental rebate, an extra $190 to $500. It is calculated automatically for property owners with $32,070 or less in income whose property taxes are more than 15% of their total income, and for those who live in Philadelphia, Scranton or Pittsburgh. With the supplement, the most you can receive is $1,500.

To verify your information you can provide proof of age, proof of income, proof of property taxes or rent paid, and the school district code for your county. For homeowners, proof of taxes should be receipted tax bills for the year being claimed. For proof of age you can submit a photocopy of one of these:

  • Passport

You must apply again each year. If you continue to meet the eligibility criteria, you must submit a new application annually to receive a rebate, and if you have applied before you will receive a booklet or reminder letter in the mail from the Department of Revenue.

After you apply, automated calls begin in April to notify applicants that their application was received, and in June to notify applicants that it was approved. Rebates begin to be issued July 1, by direct deposit or by check mailed to you, depending on the payment option you choose on your application. You can check on your rebate with the Where's My Rebate tool online or by calling 1-888-PATAXES (728-2937); have the primary applicant's Social Security number, date of birth, and application year ready.

To date, funding has been available to allow all who qualify to benefit from the program. The program is supported by funds from Pennsylvania gaming.

One warning from the department: some past applicants have received calls from scammers. The Department of Revenue will never ask you for your bank account information over the phone, so do not give that out. Scam calls can be reported to the Office of Attorney General.
