Special Olympics Sports and Athlete Registration in Berks County

Special Olympics Pennsylvania, Berks County offers sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Training and competition are free for athletes and their families. Athletes must be at least 8 years old.

To get involved, complete the Application for Participation, including the physical, and submit it to the local program coordinator. Mail the completed form to P.O. Box 6735, Reading PA 19610, or email it to sopbcmanager@gmail.com. The application is linked from the Become an Athlete page on the program website.

Before competing, an athlete must train with the local program for at least eight consecutive weeks. Physical forms are good for three years. Athletes cannot practice until an up-to-date physical is in both the county database and the coach’s binder.

The Sports Offered page lists these practice arrangements:

  • Athletics: Sundays, March to June, 12:00 to 1:00, at Berks Catholic.
  • Aquatics: Sundays, January to June, 11:00 to 2:00, at the Reading High School pool, 801 N. 13th Street, Reading.
  • Basketball: Saturdays, April to June, at Northeast Middle School, 1216 N. 13th Street, Reading. The 5v5 practice runs 11:00 to 1:00 and the 3v3 practice runs 11:00 to 12:30.
  • Bocce ball: Monday nights, September to November, 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at St. Marco Society, 4945 Commerce Street, Temple.
  • Bowling: Saturdays at Heister Lanes, 801 Heister Lane, Reading, 12:45 to 3:00. Recreational bowling runs September to November and competition bowling runs December to February.
  • Floor hockey: Sundays, November to February, 1:00 to 3:00, at Northeast Middle School, 1216 N. 13th Street, Reading.
  • Gymnastics: specific Saturdays, January to May, 5:00 to 6:30, at Stallone Gym, 3135 Pricetown Rd., Temple.
  • Soccer: Sundays, August to November, 9:30 to 11:00, at the Reading High School field.
  • Softball: Sundays, February to June, 1:00 to 3:00, at Albright College, 1621 N. 13th Street, Reading.
  • Volleyball: Tuesdays, August to November, 7:30, at Sokols Catholic Club, 411 Crestmont Street, Reading.
