Free School and Parenting Support From BCIU ELECT
The Berks County Intermediate Unit’s ELECT program helps pregnant and parenting young people work toward a high school diploma or GED while raising their children. Services are free and support young people in Berks County schools.
ELECT combines academic help with parenting support. Services include tutoring, mentoring and homework assistance; child development and parenting education; health and nutrition education; child-care and transportation referrals; career exploration; home visits; and year-round case management. It also helps young parents return to school and plan for work or further education. The Fatherhood Initiative supports young fathers and their relationships with their children and families.
School enrollment, age and benefit or income rules apply. The state’s ELECT rules cover young parents receiving TANF cash assistance and those who do not receive TANF but have personal monthly earned income at or below 235% of the federal poverty income guidelines. The income test concerns the young parent’s own earnings.
The program’s published age limits differ between the local referral page and state guidance, so a single age cutoff is not reliable. Start with the PPT Online Self-Referral Form at berksiu.org/page/pregnant-parenting-teen-services. A member of the BCIU team will contact you. The page also offers a printable referral form and a Spanish version.
