School Help for Children Experiencing Homelessness in Berks County
The Berks County Intermediate Unit runs the Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness program, known as ECYEH, which helps children and youth who do not have stable housing get and stay in school. It is an initiative of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, based on the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, the law that ensures homeless children and youth have access to a free and appropriate public education.
The program is for children and youth experiencing homelessness. The Berks County Intermediate Unit administers ECYEH for Region 2, which covers Berks, Chester, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and Schuylkill counties.
The team works to remove barriers to education for students experiencing homelessness, teaches the community about the nature of homelessness, and provides support to schools, families, and communities.
