School Help for Muhlenberg Students Without Stable Housing

Muhlenberg School District has a social worker in each of its four schools and a district liaison for homelessness who help students who do not have a fixed, regular and adequate place to sleep at night, under the McKinney-Vento Act and Pennsylvania's Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness program (ECYEH).

This is for you and your Muhlenberg child if you lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence. That includes children and youth sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship or a similar reason; living in motels, hotels, trailer parks or camping grounds because there is no other adequate place to stay; living in emergency or transitional shelters; or abandoned in hospitals. It also includes children and youth whose main nighttime residence is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation, such as cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, or bus or train stations, and migratory children who qualify as homeless.

To get started, call the district at 610-921-8000 or visit the social worker at your child's school:

  • Muhlenberg Elementary Center, Amanda Foulds, extension 6119
  • C.E. Cole Intermediate School, Emily Carmichael, extension 2003
  • Muhlenberg Junior High School, Liliana Cuesta, extension 3515
  • Muhlenberg High School, Lauren Heydt, extension 4256

You can also take questions to the district liaison for homelessness, Joe Scoboria, MSD ECYEH Liaison, at 610-921-8000 extension 7309 or scoboriaj@muhlsdk12.net.

The district office is at 801 Bellevue Avenue, Reading PA 19605.

The page links to the national guidance on confirming eligibility for McKinney-Vento rights and services, to School Board Policy 251, and to ECYEH community resource brochures in English and Spanish from bceh.org. The district also posts a separate public notice of rights page for families experiencing homelessness.

The page does not list office hours or say whether you need an appointment, and it does not describe what specific help, such as transportation or school supplies, is provided in each case.
