Child Abuse Reports to Berks Children and Youth Services
Berks County Children and Youth Services takes reports about children in Berks County who may be abused or neglected, and its staff investigate all reports of child maltreatment in the county. The agency is assigned to protect children, up to eighteen years of age, from abuse and neglect. Its stated mission is to protect children and assure their physical and emotional well-being as provided by law, and to preserve, strengthen and empower their families.
Any information regarding the abuse or neglect of a Berks County child should be reported at 610-478-6700 or to the state CHILDLINE office at 1-800-932-0313. The 610-478-6700 number reaches the county agency in Reading; 1-800-932-0313 is the statewide ChildLine number for reporting child abuse anywhere in Pennsylvania. The county agency has 24-hour on call services for emergencies. The agency's e-mail address button is not intended for reports of child abuse or neglect, so make a report by phone.
Mandated reporters can go to the Pennsylvania Child Welfare Portal at compass.state.pa.us/cwis/public/home. The agency also posts a Mandated Reporter Request for Update Form; follow the instructions on how to submit the request found at the top of the form, and note the information at the bottom that explains what mandated reporters have the right to know under the Child Protective Services Law.
After a report, staff investigate. For families at risk of future abuse or neglect, services and monitoring are implemented to ensure child safety and allow the children to remain in their homes. For some cases, placement outside the family's home is ordered by the court, and the parents participate in services to allow the children's safe return. When a safe return is not able to occur, the agency is required to request that the Court terminate parental rights, and a permanent adoptive resource is located, often within the child's family or community. The agency also runs adoption, foster care, in-home services and out-of-home placement.

The phone is 610-478-6700, the TTD line is 610-478-6802 and the fax is 610-478-6799. County building hours are 8 AM to 5 PM, closed on holidays, and department hours may vary. Outside those hours, the 24-hour on call service covers emergencies.
