Meals on Wheels Home Delivered Meals in Boyertown
Boyertown Area Multi-Service runs Meals on Wheels, which brings a hot noon meal, and an optional cold evening meal, to people who are 60 years and older, homebound, and disabled and/or unable to shop for groceries or prepare a meal for themselves.
To receive meals, the recipient is 60 years of age or older and typically is disabled, has limited resources to secure groceries and/or cook and prepare food safely. Eligibility is based entirely upon need. Examples are being essentially homebound, unable to prepare meals, unable to shop for food or purchase meals, or having no cooking facilities. There are no income requirements or restrictions, and qualification for the program does not require a financial report.
All meals are prepared on site at Multi-Service in its commercial kitchen under the supervision of the Executive Chef and Sous Chef, with the help of volunteers, and the meals are approved by a registered dietician. Noon meals include an appetizer, entree (protein), vegetable, starch, bread, margarine, 1% milk and dessert. Most meals are low-salt, low-fat and low sugar, so they accommodate most prescription diets ordered by physicians. Trained volunteers deliver the meals 5 days a week. How long a person receives meals is based on need: it can be short-term help while recovering from an illness or injury, or long-term service if necessary.
Anyone can make a referral to Meals on Wheels by calling Multi-Service at (610) 367-6957. The Meals on Wheels Case Manager will then make a home visit to assess eligibility, and eligible individuals begin receiving meals within the next week. You can also submit your information through the Request Information form on the Meals on Wheels page at boyertownareamulti-service.org, and the Case Manager will get back to you during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Recipients who are able can contribute towards the cost of the meal, with $2.50 suggested as an anonymous donation per meal. No one will be denied service due to inability to contribute.
A few things to know before you call. In the event of inclement weather, meal delivery may be canceled, and emergency "snowpacks" are available to recipients to use on those occasions. Those who are not eligible may be referred to The Center at Spring Street, which offers a hot noon day meal to anyone age 55+ or disabled. The program is funded by the Berks County Area Agency on Aging and Montgomery County Aging and Adult Services, and the agency serves the Boyertown School District Area and surrounding communities of Amity, District, Hereford, Pike and Oley townships. Be aware of scams: at no time will a Meals on Wheels staff member call you requesting information on the status of your mortgage, rent, or bank balances, and if you get that kind of call you should hang up and report it to the office at 610-367-6957.
