Major Systems Repair Loan for Low Income Berks County Homeowners
The Redevelopment Authority of the County of Berks runs the Major Systems Program, which helps low-income families who own and live in their home pay to repair or replace a major system of the house. On behalf of the County of Berks, the Authority administers the program, and the help comes as a one-time deferred payment loan rather than a grant. The program may be funded by federal, state, or local sources.
It is for low-income families who own and occupy an attached or detached single-family home that needs a major system repaired or replaced. The house must be located in a borough or township of Berks County. The money must be used for an item or items that threaten the health, safety, or welfare of the household. The handout does not print an income limit, a loan amount, or the repayment terms, so ask the Authority what the current limits are.
Eligible uses are:
- Replace or Repair Roof
- Replace or Repair Heating System
- Mechanical Repairs and Structural Items
- ADA Fixtures and Ramps
To start, ask at the Authority's front desk for an intake form, or get a printable intake form at co.berks.pa.us/dept/berksra. Completed forms can be mailed to the Berks County Redevelopment Authority, 400 E. Wyomissing Avenue, Ground Floor, Suite #2, Mohnton, PA 19540.
The Authority's office is at that same Mohnton address. Its phone number for general questions is 610-478-6325, and the office is open Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The handout is an older program sheet, so check with the Authority on whether funding is available before you count on the loan. Leesport Borough also points residents to this program; Borough Hall, at 27 South Canal Street, Leesport, PA 19533, can be reached at 610-926-2115.
