Peerstar matches adults in Pennsylvania with a Certified Peer Specialist, someone who has lived through their own mental health challenges and is trained to use that experience to support others in recovery. A peer specialist can help with finding resources for housing, food, employment and transportation; guidance on job searching, practicing interviews, volunteering or returning to school; learning to speak up for yourself and understand what medical professionals are saying; building a personal crisis plan, coping skills and a wellness toolkit; relapse prevention and identifying triggers; work on physical health, sleep habits and substance use recovery; building confidence and a personal network of supporters; and building or repairing relationships and practicing communication skills. Peer specialists can also coordinate with a person's other service providers.
Who it is for: adults 18 and older with mental health challenges that impact daily life, who want support from someone who has been there. Peerstar also lists specialists with experience serving older adults 65 and up in nursing homes, personal care facilities or living independently; people managing both mental health and substance use; people with mental health conditions and intellectual disabilities; people navigating mental health challenges within the justice system; transitional age youth described as 14 and older; and people adjusting to life in group homes, hospitals or in-patient residential facilities.
