To check road closures, crashes, construction, and winter conditions in Berks County, use 511PA, PennDOT's free traveler information service, at 511pa.com, in the free 511PA app, or by dialing 511 from any phone in Pennsylvania. It shows what PennDOT knows about state-maintained highways and interstates in real time, including live traffic cameras, but it does not cover most local township and borough streets.

511PA is the Commonwealth's official travel information service, run by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. It is free and available 24 hours a day. This guide is about checking conditions before you drive. If instead you need to report a pothole, downed sign, or washed-out road, see our guide to reporting a road problem in Berks County.

How to check road conditions, step by step

  1. Open 511pa.com in a browser, or open the free 511PA app. The map opens first, with road colors showing current traffic speed.
  2. Zoom the map to the Reading area, or type a route or place into the search box. You can look up a specific highway such as US 422, I-176, I-78, or Route 61.
  3. Turn on the layer you want using the map's layers and legend controls, or pick a list from the Traffic menu: Possible Travel Delays (incidents and crashes), Road Conditions, Cameras, Message Signs, and Weather Stations.
  4. Click an incident or construction icon to read what PennDOT has posted, including the location and expected impact.
  5. Click a camera icon to see a live traffic image. The camera images refresh every five seconds, so you see close to current conditions.
  6. To check by phone, dial 511 from any cell or landline physically in Pennsylvania. The call is free, though standard cell minutes may apply. The system is voice-activated; say a route number, city, or county to hear conditions. From outside Pennsylvania, call 1-877-511-PENN (7366).

Which roads 511PA shows, and which it does not

511PA covers state roads, not local ones. On the website it reports traffic incidents and construction on roughly 40,000 miles of PennDOT- and Turnpike-operated roadway statewide, with traffic speeds on about 15,000 of those miles. The phone system and personalized alerts use a smaller core network of about 2,900 miles: all interstates, including the Pennsylvania Turnpike, plus selected US and state routes.

In Berks County that means interstates and numbered highways such as I-78, US 422, I-176, and the state routes are included. What 511PA generally does not show is a closed township or borough street. PennDOT says questions about specific local road conditions should go to its District Office rather than the 511 system.

Berks County government maintains bridges, not roads, so there is no county road hotline to check. Nearly every public road here is either a state road PennDOT maintains or a local street a township or borough maintains. Our guide to reporting a road problem explains how to tell which is which, and how Berks County government works covers which offices handle what.

For a closure on a local street, check your township or borough's own website or social media. Many municipalities post road and weather closures there, and 511PA will not.

Winter conditions and vehicle restrictions

During winter storms, the 511PA Road Conditions layer color-codes conditions across the core network of about 2,900 miles. Plow-truck drivers report what they see at regular intervals, so the colors reflect field reports, not a guess.

PennDOT can also impose vehicle restrictions and reduced speed limits on interstates and other major roads during severe weather, under the Commonwealth's weather event vehicle restriction plan. The plan works in numbered tiers that PennDOT raises as conditions worsen. The entry level, a Tier 1 restriction, bars certain vehicles from affected roads: tractors without trailers, tractors towing empty or lightly loaded trailers, empty or lightly loaded box trucks that meet the commercial-vehicle definition, passenger vehicles towing trailers, recreational vehicles and motorhomes, buses and motor coaches, and motorcycles. Speed limits can also drop to 45 mph.

Check active restrictions on the 511PA Vehicle Restrictions map, or sign up for vehicle-restriction alerts through My 511 on the site. Berks County sits in PennDOT Engineering District 5, based in Allentown, which also covers Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, and Schuylkill counties. The Pennsylvania Turnpike

The Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) runs through southern Berks County near the Morgantown interchange, and I-176 connects it toward Reading. The Turnpike appears on 511PA, which draws in Turnpike conditions and links out to the Turnpike's own site. For the most detailed Turnpike-only alerts, the Pennsylvania Turnpike runs its own website and app.

Get alerts instead of checking each time

With a free My 511 account you can save a route and have the system email or text you when a crash, backup, or closure comes up on it. The 511PA app's Drive Mode announces incidents out loud as you approach them and can suggest up to three routes with travel times. Saved routes and cameras sync between the website and the app once you log in.

FAQ

Is 511PA free?

Yes. The 511PA website, the 511PA mobile app, and the 511 phone line are all free and run by PennDOT. Dialing 511 costs nothing, though your carrier's standard cell minutes may apply.

Does 511PA show local road closures in Berks County?

Usually not. 511PA covers state-maintained highways, interstates, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It does not track most township and borough streets. For a closed local street, check your municipality's website or social media, and direct specific local road questions to PennDOT's District 5 office.

What number do I call for road conditions in Pennsylvania?

Dial 511 from any phone inside Pennsylvania to hear real-time traffic and road conditions, free. From outside the state, call 1-877-511-PENN (7366). The system is voice-activated, so say a route number, city, or county.

How do I see traffic cameras in Berks County?

Open the map at 511pa.com or in the 511PA app, turn on the Cameras layer, and click a camera icon near your route to see a live image. The images refresh every five seconds. You can also open the Cameras list from the Traffic menu.

Can I get an alert when my route has a problem?

Yes. Set up a free My 511 account at 511pa.com, save your route, and choose email or text alerts for crashes, congestion, or closures. You can also sign up for winter vehicle-restriction alerts through the same account.
