About the class
Clay on Main in Oley runs this class series for home school students ages 8 to 12. Each week covers a new topic. Students get handouts on the subject and complete a hands on activity, so they leave with something they made and something they learned.
Topics span art, science, chemistry, anthropology, art history, creative writing and environmentalism, following a STEAM approach. The lessons are written to be easy to follow and the instructors adjust for younger and older students in the room. Along the way students practice putting their own ideas into their work.
The studio is set up for ceramics and glass work, and there is a gallery on site showing local and visiting artists that students get to walk through. A kitchen is open to students and parents for tea, cold water bottles or a break. Parents may stay in the classroom but are not required to. Scholarships are available to families in need.
