About the class
Clay on Main runs a home school series in Oley that gives students a new topic each week. Every session includes handouts on the subject and a hands on activity. Topics range across art, science, chemistry, anthropology, art history, creative writing and environmentalism, following STEAM program models. Along the way students practice expressing their ideas creatively and grow as both scholars and artists.
The program is built for home school students, with ideal ages of 8 to 12. The lessons are written to be easy to follow and the instructors stay flexible, so younger and older students in the group can both get something from the same topic. Parents do not need to stay in the classroom, but they are welcome to.
Clay on Main is a fully equipped ceramics and glass studio with space for creative and scientific work. Students also get a chance to visit the gallery, which shows work by local and visiting artists in many mediums. There is a kitchen that students and parents may use to make tea, keep water bottles cold or take a break. Scholarships are available to families in need. Sign up through the Clay on Main website.
