The Reading Public Museum presents a four-part art history course on American illustration, taught jointly by Scott Schweigert, Curator of Art and Civilizations, and Geoff Fleming, Executive Director and CEO. Sessions run on Tuesday afternoons.
From magazine covers and storybooks to postcards and advertisements, illustration shaped how generations of Americans pictured their country and themselves. One lecture looks at the Brandywine Valley artists who transformed the field, including the Pyle School and N. C. Wyeth. Another explores the work of American postcard artists. A third turns to Norman Rockwell's view of everyday life, and the last covers the often overlooked contributions of women illustrators. Together the talks trace how illustration fed into the fine arts.
This is a lecture course for adults, with no prior study needed. You can sign up for a single class or for the full four weeks through the Museum's event page.
