What a Dentist Visit Costs in Berks County Without Insurance
Published prices and membership plan terms from Berks County dental practices, what the line items on a first-visit quote mean, and what Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage cover.

If you don't have dental insurance and it's been a while, a first appointment at the Berks practices that publish a cash price runs $69 to $89 as of October 2026 for an exam, X-rays and a cleaning. Membership plans with a yearly price run from $49 for a national chain's plan to $300 at a Reading practice, for one person. If you've been putting off the dentist over money, price the exam-and-cleaning visit first; implants, braces and the clinics that charge by income are separate questions with separate prices.
Cost is one of the top reasons adults give for staying away from the dentist, and most dental spending comes out of pocket rather than from insurance. A few of the dentists in Berks County print their first-visit price on their websites.
How much does a dentist visit cost without insurance in Berks County?
The first visit back is an exam, X-rays and a cleaning. Bear Valley Dental Care in Boyertown prices that whole first visit at $89 for new patients.
Affordable Dental Solutions in Reading does the same three things for $69. That price is for new patients paying cash, and the cleaning in it is the regular kind; the deeper cleaning for gum disease is a separate charge, explained below.
Some of the prices advertised for a first visit leave the cleaning out, and the offers line up like this:
| What the price covers | Berks price | Conditions on the page | Practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam, full set of X-rays and routine cleaning | $69 | New patients, cash only; routine cleaning only; through December 31, 2026 | Affordable Dental Solutions, Reading |
| Exam, X-ray and cleaning | $89 | New patients only | Bear Valley Dental Care, Boyertown |
| Exam and X-rays, no cleaning | $79 (regular price listed as $222 to $364) | New patients; not with state or federal programs; limited time | Merit Dental, Sinking Spring |
| Exam for one problem (a dull ache or a tooth that's bothering you) with 2D X-rays, no cleaning | $150 | A 3D scan is billed separately | Preventive Dental, Reading |
| Exam and X-rays, no cleaning | $29 | New patients without dental insurance, 21 and older, at participating offices through December 31, 2026 | Aspen Dental (national offer; Wyomissing office) |
The practices' own published first-visit prices, read October 18, 2026.
The price depends on whether the cleaning is in it. If you're coming in with one problem, a dull ache or a tooth that's bothering you, Preventive Dental's $150 one-problem exam in the table is the price for that kind of visit, and the repair itself is quoted after the exam. If you think you have a cavity but nothing hurts yet, the full first-visit exam is the one that looks at every tooth.
What the three line items on a first-visit quote mean.
Ask what the special covers and you'll hear three items. The first is a comprehensive exam, which is the full first-visit exam, fuller than the check-up exam at later visits. The second is X-rays, which come in more than one kind. A full-mouth series is the complete set of X-rays. Bitewings are the small X-rays of the back teeth, taken two or four at a time. The third is an adult prophylaxis, which is a routine cleaning.
Affordable Dental Solutions' $69 special lists exactly those three by their ADA procedure codes, the numbers a dental bill uses for each service. Every Berks special in the table includes X-rays; what varies is whether the cleaning is included and which X-rays you get.
What a teeth cleaning costs without insurance, and when it costs more.
So what does the cleaning cost on its own? A 2023 survey of dental offices put a routine cleaning at $203 on average, with a range of $50 to $350, and Pennsylvania at $198. That figure comes from a national survey of dental offices, not from Berks, so treat it as a yardstick rather than a local price. A Berks special that includes the cleaning for $69 or $89 costs less than the survey's cleaning alone.
The catch is the word routine. If the exam finds gum disease, the next visit may be a deeper cleaning below the gumline, which dentists call scaling and root planing and bill by section of the mouth. After gum treatment, the regular cleaning is replaced by periodontal maintenance, the follow-up schedule. The $69 special says in its fine print that it doesn't include either one, and the price is quoted after the exam, so ask for the number before the work starts. Whether your mouth needs the routine cleaning or the deeper one is the dentist's call after the exam, and the price changes with it.
What a dental membership plan is and what it costs in Berks County.
A membership plan, also called an in-office plan or a dental savings plan, is a fixed fee you pay to the dental office itself, monthly or yearly, that usually includes your preventive visits and discounts the rest of the work. It's a contract with that one office or chain, and the plans that address the point say outright that it isn't insurance.
Malloy & Devine Signature Dental in Wyomissing prices its plan by the month: $30 for adults, $26 for children 12 and under, $50 for patients on a gum-disease schedule, plus a one-time $99 signup fee that the office says also covers the first month's payment.
The adult plan there includes two exams, two cleanings and bitewings once a year, with 15% off treatment. The other plans with a printed price charge by the year; Bear Valley Dental Care's one-person plan is $259, and the yearly plans with a printed price run from $49 to $300 for one person.
| Practice or plan | Price | What's included | Discount on other work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aspen Dental Savings Plan (national chain; Wyomissing office) | $49 a year ($29 each added family member) | Exams and X-rays free | 30% off cleanings, 20% off crowns, 15% off fillings |
| American Dental Solutions, Platinum Plus (chain with Berks offices) | $99 a year ($169 a family) | Routine preventive care covered; ask the office what the fee covers | Up to 60% off all services |
| Bear Valley Dental Care, Boyertown | $259 a year for one person ($239 each added member) | No yearly maximum or deductible; ask the office what the fee covers | Discounts on treatment |
| Green Hills Dental, Reading | $300 an adult ($225 a child to 18) | 2 exams, 2 cleanings, 1 emergency exam, the year's X-rays | Up to 25% off |
| Malloy & Devine Signature Dental, Wyomissing | $30 a month for an adult ($26 a child, $50 on a gum-disease schedule) | 2 exams, 2 cleanings, 2 fluoride treatments, yearly bitewings, 1 emergency visit | 15% off treatment |
| Essential Smile Plan (linked from Merit Dental, Sinking Spring) | $69 a year plus a $10 fee ($30 each added member) | Discounts only | 50% off exams, 15% off cleanings, 25% off X-rays, 15% off the rest |
Terms from each plan's own page, read October 18, 2026; the Aspen plan and the Essential Smile Plan say on their pages that they aren't insurance.
So how do the six plans differ? Mostly in what's included. Green Hills Dental's $300 plan in Reading and the Wyomissing monthly plan list two cleanings and the X-rays as included. The $99 chain plan says preventive care is covered without listing the visits, and the Boyertown plan's page lists its terms without listing the visits either, so ask what the fee buys. The $49 chain plan makes exams and X-rays free and discounts the cleaning, so the cleaning is still a bill. And the Sinking Spring practice's plan, run through a national partner, gives percentages off everything rather than free visits.
Ask about the cancellation term before you sign; some plan pages print it and some don't.
Does Medicare cover dentist visits?
In most cases Original Medicare doesn't cover routine dental care: cleanings, fillings, extractions and dentures. It may pay for dental work tied to certain covered medical treatment, like an exam before a heart valve replacement or a transplant. Medicare Advantage plans, the private plans that replace Original Medicare, may add dental benefits like check-ups or cleanings, and those benefits are generally limited, so check with the plan before you join. To sort out which kind you have, read how Medicare plans work in Berks County.
Frequently asked questions about dentist costs without insurance.
How much is a teeth cleaning without insurance in Reading, PA?
Affordable Dental Solutions' $69 new-patient special in Reading covers the full first-visit exam, a full set of X-rays and a routine cleaning, cash only. For a cleaning on its own, the Pennsylvania average in a 2023 survey was $198.
Do new patient specials include X-rays?
Every Berks first-visit special covered here includes X-rays. What varies is which X-rays (a full set at Affordable Dental Solutions, whatever X-rays the dentist calls necessary at the national chain's offices, 2D X-rays as needed at Preventive Dental, unspecified at the other two) and whether the cleaning is included at all.
What should you check before joining a dental membership plan?
Read the plan's own page for three things: what's included outright (exams, cleanings, X-rays), what's only discounted and by how much, and the term, meaning how long you're signed up and how you cancel.
How often do you need to see a dentist?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. Some people need to visit once or twice a year, others more. For the wider picture, our guide to healthcare providers in Berks County is the place to start.
How to budget for a first visit and book it.
So what should you set aside? If you want one visit, budget $69 to $89 for an exam, X-rays and a routine cleaning at one of the two practices that include the cleaning, and more if the exam finds gum disease, because the deeper cleaning is priced separately. If you expect to go twice a year, ask the office what a regular exam and cleaning costs after the special, since most of the published prices are new-patient offers, and set that against the plan's yearly fee and what it includes.
Then call. Ask whether the price includes the cleaning and which X-rays come with it. Start with the two practices above or with the county dentists page, and book one this week.
