If you have no dental coverage and can't pay a private practice's full price, you still have places to call in Berks County. Two community health center dental clinics, one in Reading and one in Barto, set your bill by your household size and income. There's a hospital dental clinic in downtown Reading. Dental schools in Philadelphia and hygiene school clinics are within a drive. Two free programs come with their own eligibility. Every office in the county is on the county dentists page.

Where can you get low-cost dental care in Berks County?

A community health center is a nonprofit clinic funded to serve everyone, insured or not, and Berks has two that do dental: Berks Community Health Center on Rockland Street in Reading, and Community Health and Dental Care on Route 100 in Barto. Barto is accepting new patients. At Rockland Street you book by calling the dental appointment line (numbers in the table below). Both see children and adults for cleanings, exams, fillings and extractions; Barto also makes dentures.

Penn State Health St. Joseph's Downtown Campus in Reading has a hospital dental clinic too. Dental residents, dentists in a hospital training year, treat patients there under the supervision of attending dental specialists. Call and ask what it charges and what help with the bill is offered.

The table has every clinic and program's address, phone, hours, who it serves and what it costs, as of October 2026.

Is there a free dental clinic near Reading?

Two free programs in this post serve Berks residents, each with its own eligibility. Mission of Mercy Pennsylvania, MOM-n-PA for short, is a two-day free clinic that moves around the state; the next one is June 11 and 12, 2027 in Harrisburg, first come, first served, with no ID and no proof of income. Every registered patient who is healthy enough to be treated is guaranteed one service, and the clinic says it may not get to everything a person needs. The clinic's own advice is that someone in pain now shouldn't wait for it; if that's you tonight, start with our page on an emergency dentist in Berks County.

Donated Dental Services, run by the Dental Lifeline Network, matches volunteer dentists with Pennsylvanians who have no means to afford dental care and are over 60, permanently or temporarily disabled, in need of medically necessary dental care, or dealing with frequent dental infections. It provides comprehensive treatment rather than emergency or cosmetic care, and Berks applications are open.

What is a sliding fee dentist, and how do you apply?

A sliding fee is a discount scale set by your household size and income. At both Berks health centers you tell them your family size and gross income when you register, fill out an application, and attach proof of income: pay stubs, a tax return or a benefit letter. If you qualify, you pay less than the care costs. Berks Community Health Center (BCHC for short) hands the application to everyone, insured or not, and its rule is "No one is denied health care at BCHC because they are unable to pay." Berks Community Health Center appears in our guide to healthcare providers in Berks County.

At Community Health and Dental Care, eligible patients get 25, 40, 55, 70 or 100 percent off, and even at the 100 percent discount a dental visit costs a flat $40 fee instead of the center's regular charge. Dental lab work carries additional fees.

At Barto you pay Community Health and Dental Care's regular charge until the application is approved, and the center says not to delay care while you wait.

For a copy of its current sliding scale, ask a patient services representative. Once the application is approved, the discount is also applied to any balance from the six months before the approval date. For a Boyertown parent with a kid's tooth and no coverage, the order is: call Barto and book the visit, bring two current pay stubs or this year's tax return, file the discount application at registration, and keep the appointment. Community Health and Dental Care also runs a free weekday shuttle for patients with an appointment. Its stops include Boyertown, Barto, Birdsboro, Pottstown and Pennsburg, and Reading isn't among the listed stops; if you live in the city without a car, the Rockland Street clinic is in town.

Union Community Care's Denver office lets you apply at registration and use the discount the same day if approved. Berks Community Health Center has agreed to join Union Community Care, and its own notice says patients keep the same health center, dentist and services while the merger is reviewed.

Do dental schools see patients from Berks County?

Yes. Temple University's Kornberg School of Dentistry in Philadelphia runs student clinics open to all patients regardless of income. A patient with a flexible schedule saves about half the cost of a private practice. The school takes Pennsylvania Medical Assistance. Penn Dental Medicine, also in Philadelphia, charges fees lower than private practices.

A hygiene clinic is a school where students clean teeth under a licensed instructor. The clinics do cleanings, exams, X-rays and fluoride at a student price. They don't do fillings, dentures or extractions, so for those you'd use one of the clinics above. Two, in Willow Street and Blue Bell, are within a drive, and they run during the fall and spring semesters.

What does each clinic or program ask you to bring?

For the health centers and Union's Denver office, bring proof of income and fill out the application at registration. For Temple and the hygiene clinics, set aside a half-day, and for the hygiene clinics go during the fall or spring semester. MOM-n-PA asks for no ID and no proof of income; Donated Dental Services asks that you meet one of its four conditions and have no means to pay. Montgomery County Community College takes credit cards only.

This page is general information about costs and programs; a question about your own mouth goes to a dentist. When you've picked your clinic or program, call it, and the county dentists page puts every office in Berks in one place.
