If you're planning a kitchen, a bathroom, an addition or a new house in Berks County, these ten general contractors are where we'd start, grouped by the kind of job so you can go straight to the ones that fit yours. Every one is a Berks company that's open right now, and their customers describe what matters on a long job: the crew showed up when it said it would, the price held, and the house was clean at the end of each day. If none of them fits, our page of general contractors in Berks County has every one we know of.

We've grouped the ten by the kind of job rather than ranking them: the first six remodel kitchens, bathrooms, basements and the rest of the house you already live in, the next two build custom homes and take on additions and remodels, and the last two do decks, siding and windows. Find yours and start there.

KMB Homes, a Leesport remodeler for kitchens, baths and basements.

KMB Homes, on Upper Van Reed Road in Leesport, is the call for a kitchen, bathroom or basement when you want to know the price and the plan before anyone pulls up a floor. The company says it grew into "a primarily residential remodeler of kitchens, bathrooms, and basements," and it also handles commercial renovations for offices and retail, so it's worth a call for a storefront as well as a house.

What customers describe is a job that went the way it was supposed to. One customer wrote, "They quoted a price and that is what I paid. No surprises!" Another said, "They told us when they'd be there every day and what they were going to be doing." Another customer noticed the end of each day: "They thoroughly cleaned up at the end of each day, which minimized the disruption for us."

One customer got a suggestion for spending less: "They suggested painting and dressing up the existing cabinets with moldings to save money." If your kitchen needs a lift more than a gut job, that's the conversation to have.

Gilmer's Home Improvements, home remodeling and repair work in Wernersville.

Gilmer's Home Improvements in Wernersville calls itself "a renovating, remodeling and contracting business that can service all of your home needs," and the list backs that up: remodeling, plus "decks, patios, general repair and handyman work." It's the one to call when your list has a new shower at the top and a dozen small repairs underneath it. The company also says "most of our work is done 'in house' by our team of qualified trades persons," which means the people working in your house are mostly its own.

Customers talk about those people. One customer wrote, "His team is very professional and courteous. I looked forward to having them come throughout the project." Another customer wrote, "I was impressed with the professionalism and quality workmanship of each person."

The advice gets mentioned too. One customer credited Gilmer's with help working out a new tiled shower and with choosing the paint colors.

Hails Home Improvements, bathroom and kitchen remodeling in West Lawn.

Hails Home Improvements, on Grandview Boulevard in West Lawn, is the remodeler for a bathroom or kitchen where the tile matters. Its work is bathroom and kitchen remodeling, flooring, basement finishing and natural stone tile, and the company says it brings "over 20 years of experience" to it.

Customers notice how the house looks at the end of the day. One customer wrote, "Every evening, his team would meticulously clean up, minimizing the usual chaos." Another said, "They truly treated our house as if it were their own…professional and polite."

And one customer valued the advice: "He offered thoughtful, practical advice that helped us make decisions we're still grateful for." A remodel is a long string of small decisions, and help making them well is worth as much as the tile work.

Eagle Construction, a Blandon remodeler that keeps to the schedule it quotes.

Eagle Construction is based in Blandon and remodels homes across Berks and Montgomery counties, and it takes inquiries for new home builds too. It's the call when the schedule is the thing you're most worried about: a baby due in the spring, family coming for the holidays, or a move-in date you can't push back.

Its customers back that up. One customer wrote, "They were always on schedule, or, more often than not, ahead of schedule." Another said, "They executed on the schedule they quoted and within the budget they quoted." Another customer added, "They were respectful of our home and kept things clean and organized."

Imperial Contracting Group, design and build for kitchens and additions in Mohnton.

Imperial Contracting Group, on Lakeview Drive in Mohnton, remodels kitchens, bathrooms and basements, builds additions and outdoor living spaces, and builds new homes. It's the one to call when you know a room doesn't work but you can't picture what would fix it. The company runs a project either way you need it: if you bring a design, it builds it, and if you don't have one, it designs it and then builds it.

That second path is what one customer describes: "From our initial meeting they were able to provide ideas and drawings that made the room make sense to me." Seeing the room on paper before anyone touches a wall saves changing your mind halfway through. Another customer kept it short: "On time and very attentive. Amazing job on the kitchen." And another customer wrote, "Reasonably priced, professionally completed projects every time."

Bodden Construction, additions and kitchen remodels from a Wyomissing family company.

Bodden Construction, on Penn Avenue in Wyomissing, calls itself "a second-generation family construction company working on residential remodels and commercial projects." It does additions, kitchen and bath remodels, custom home renovations and basement finishes, and it works with "local, reputable subcontractors and vendors." Its project manager is "often your point of contact," working on estimates, scheduling and the job site. It's the call when the job rearranges the house, not just one room.

One customer's project shows what that looks like: "Converted upstairs and downstairs porches into enclosed mudroom and sunroom. Combined two rooms to create a master suite."

The daily habits come up too. One customer wrote, "They were scheduled to start work at 8 am each day and they were there at least 5 minutes early." Another said, "When they were finished for the day they kept everything clean and neat." And another customer put it in seven words: "Always quickly responsive to calls and e-mails."

The next two build whole houses, and both will take on an addition or a remodel as well.

D&B Elite Custom, a Wyomissing builder of custom homes and remodels.

D&B Elite Custom, on State Hill Road in Wyomissing, has been building custom homes since 2000 and calls itself a complete design-build contractor for new custom homes and home remodeling. Design-build means the same company draws the house and builds it. Each job gets a project coordinator who is "your point of contact." It's the builder to call if you're starting from a lot and a wish list.

Berks County Living's People's Choice survey named D&B Elite Custom its Home Contractor in 2022 and 2023, and its New Home Builder in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

One customer wrote that the company was "Very easy to work with and extremely organized in terms of the day-to-day planning." Another customer, who built a house with them, wrote, "We couldn't have asked for a more transparent and efficient home building process! They rock!" And another customer wrote, "I have used them several times for different projects and will continue to use them in the future."

D&S Elite Construction, custom homes and additions in Douglassville.

D&S Elite Construction, on Benjamin Franklin Highway East in Douglassville (not to be confused with D&B Elite Custom in Wyomissing), calls itself "a full service general contracting company." It builds custom new homes, does design-build, renovates kitchens and bathrooms, and builds additions. The way it works is the reason to call: on a custom home build, it handles every phase "as a single point of contact," permitting included. If you'd rather not line up the permit, the excavator and the cabinet delivery yourself, that's the arrangement you want.

One customer wrote, "Not only did the final results exceed my expectations, but it was completed under the proposed timeline." Another described a big interior job: "The process from start to end of our wall removal, flooring, and bathroom total remodel were seamless." And another customer listed what mattered most to them: "Excellent communication, detailed planning, excellent scheduling and wonderful craftsmanship!"

If the job is outside the house, a deck, new siding or windows, the next two are where we'd start. Gilmer's and Imperial, above, also do decks, patios and outdoor living, so check them too if one is closer to you.

Morrison Custom Construction, Mohnton decks and outdoor living with the permits handled.

Morrison Custom Construction, on Golf Course Road in Mohnton, builds decks and outdoor living spaces and does siding, windows and doors. Its line about paperwork is the reason to call: "We navigate local township building permits, zoning setback requirements, and architectural HOA reviews so you don't have to." A setback is how far from the property line a deck or addition has to stay, and in a development with a homeowners association, the design may need the association's approval as well. Morrison takes care of both.

Customers talk about early starts and careful work. One customer wrote, "They were onsite every day at 6:50 a.m. waiting to start at 7…" Another, with a pool in the yard, said, "They did a great job protecting the pool while they worked and cleaned up each night (I could walk around in bare feet out there and not worry about stepping on things)." The same customer who mentioned the early starts added, "The project was done…with no surprises on added costs."

Robs Home Improvements & Construction, decks, windows and siding from Reading.

Robs Home Improvements & Construction is a Reading contractor whose own list runs from windows, doors, siding, roofing and decks to basements, additions and new construction. It serves Berks County, Lancaster County and the area "within an Hour from our Home Base." It's the call for the outside of the house, and for anyone who wants one company to build the deck and finish the basement.

Customers describe exactly that mix. One customer wrote, "He did a beautiful job replacing our deck and installing new front door." Another had a whole list done: "Finished our basement, built us a beautiful deck, replaced windows and doors."

One customer also wrote that the company "Helped me navigate permitting issues with the township," which is help worth having on any job that needs a permit.

How we picked the best general contractors in Berks County.

Every company on this page was open as of October 2, 2026. The picks rest on each company's customer reviews on BerksConnect and on what its own website says it does. All ten main picks say they work on people's homes, and all have customers praising the work along with the things that matter on a long job: showing up on schedule, a price that held, keeping in touch, or a clean house at the end of the day. One, D&B Elite Custom, was named in Berks County Living's People's Choice results for 2022, 2023 and 2024. The ten are grouped by the kind of job, not ranked, and nobody paid to be on this list. Questions people ask about general contractors in Berks County.

Do general contractors in Berks County need a license?

Pennsylvania doesn't license home improvement contractors; it registers them with the Attorney General's office instead. A contractor who did $5,000 or more of home improvement work in the previous tax year has to register, and the registration number starts with "PA". You can look up any company at hicsearch.attorneygeneral.gov before you sign anything, and our post on how to verify a contractor's registration in Berks County walks through the lookup step by step.

Who pulls the building permits for a remodel in Berks County?

Your township, borough or city decides which permits a job needs, so the answer depends on where you live and what you're building. Several companies on this list say they handle it: Morrison navigates township building permits and zoning setbacks, D&S Elite lists permitting among the phases it takes care of on a custom home build, and one of Robs' customers credits the company with help on a township permitting issue. Whoever you hire, ask who pulls the permits before the work starts.

Which of these contractors take small jobs and repairs?

Gilmer's lists general repair and handyman work alongside its remodeling, so it's the first call for a list of small things around the house. And if your kitchen is the small job, remember what KMB Homes suggested to one customer: paint the existing cabinets and dress them up with moldings instead of replacing them.

Which of these contractors also do commercial work?

Bodden Construction does commercial fit-outs, which means finishing the inside of an office or store for the business moving in. D&S Elite Construction does commercial, church and even zoo construction, and KMB Homes renovates offices and retail space. Burkey Construction in Reading, on the list above, is a commercial builder, and so are Dolan Construction and The Kaiser-Martin Group.
