Why does a bill run $100 an hour when the person holding the wrench does not? A Reading-area HVAC technician's median wage is $29.68 an hour. The billed rate is several times that because the truck, insurance, parts stock, drive time, callbacks, and the office all ride inside it.

After-hours, weekend and holiday HVAC calls in Berks County.
Nationally, an after-hours call bills at $160 to $250 an hour, roughly 1.5 to 2 times the daytime rate. A furnace that quits at 9 p.m. in January can cost close to double what the same repair costs at 9 a.m.
Does that hold in Berks? Not quite, because Berks companies rarely print a surcharge figure, several say outright that they charge no overtime or emergency premium, and plans commonly carry a no-overtime term.
Ask three things when you call after hours:
- What is the after-hours fee?
- Does it apply toward the repair?
- Is the technician coming tonight, or first thing tomorrow?

What about refrigerant? Nationally a recharge runs $200 to $500. R-410A runs $12 to $25 a pound for the refrigerant alone and $40 to $90 a pound installed, and R-454B, the refrigerant in many new systems, runs $80 a pound.
Two things before you pay for any of it. Systems made since 2025 use a newer refrigerant that costs more and ran short in 2025; which makers use which is in our post on whether the HVAC brand matters. And a home AC is a closed loop, so a system low on refrigerant has a leak; ask for a leak search before a recharge, or you will buy the same pounds again next summer.
If the part on the estimate is a compressor or a coil and the system is past ten years old, run the $5,000 rule first: multiply the system's age in years by the repair estimate, and a number over $5,000 favors replacement. A ten-year-old system with a $600 repair comes out at $6,000, and that is a replacement conversation.
