Driving School and the PA Junior License in Berks County
What driving lessons cost around Berks County, and PennDOT's steps for a teen: the permit at 16, the 65 hours, the road test and the junior license.

If your fifteen-year-old turns sixteen soon, lessons at one school that serves Berks from a Royersford office run $219 to $239 for two hours, and from $639 for three lessons to $1,129 for five with pickup at home. A road test at a private tester runs $99 to $150. Nothing in Pennsylvania's sequence requires a driving school, with one exception: a course approved by the state's Department of Education is what lets a teen drop the junior license's curfew and passenger limits before 18. The driving schools in Berks County page lists who teaches here.
How much does driving school cost in Berks County?
A driver's education course, the package of 30 hours of classroom theory and six hours behind the wheel approved by the state's Department of Education, is required for one thing only: the regular license, the one without the junior limits, before 18.
The Berks school with the most reviews on our county page is John's Driving School - Reading, and its reviews keep coming back to patient instructors and easy scheduling. John's also gives the road test, and the reviews praise calm examiners. John's prices its lesson packages by zip code on its site. For Berks high school students it also teaches the Berks County Intermediate Unit's driver education course, six hours behind the wheel in three two-hour sessions plus a 30-hour online theory course; no price is posted for it, so ask the Intermediate Unit.
The lesson prices in the table below are one other school's, which serves Berks from a Royersford office. Its lessons start from meeting points in Royersford and Pottstown at the lower figure, or with pickup at home at the higher one.
How a teen gets a learner's permit in Pennsylvania.
Your teen can't apply for the learner's permit, the first stage, before the sixteenth birthday. The application is form DL-180, and the back of it is an exam a health care provider fills in no earlier than six months before the birthday. A teen under 18 also needs the parent or guardian consent form, DL-180TD, signed before a notary if you won't be at the center. Bring the forms, original proof of date of birth and identity, a signed Social Security card and the fee; the centers take cards, checks and money orders, never cash. A question about a particular teen's medical form or driving record goes to PennDOT's call center at 717-412-5300.
The knowledge test is 18 multiple-choice questions, and 15 right is a pass. No appointment is needed; walk in, and a retake is the next business day. The permit is good for one year.
Here's the whole road, in order, with what each step costs.
| Step | PennDOT's rule | Printed cost |
|---|---|---|
| Learner's permit, at 16 | Form DL-180 with the doctor's exam, the parent consent form DL-180TD, originals of ID and birth date, a signed Social Security card; vision screening and an 18-question knowledge test, no appointment | $45.50, which also covers the four-year license |
| Six months of practice | 65 hours of supervised driving with licensed drivers 21 or older, at least 10 at night and 5 in bad weather, certified by a parent on form DL-180C | At one school serving Berks from Royersford: $219 to $239 for one two-hour lesson, $639 to $699 for three, $1,039 to $1,129 for five; the higher figure includes pickup at home |
| Road test | By appointment, booked online or by phone up to six months ahead, at the Shillington or Exeter center or at a PennDOT-certified private tester | No separate charge on PennDOT's fee list; $99 or $150 at the Berks private tester |
| Junior license | No driving 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. without a parent, guardian or spouse 18 or older; one passenger under 18 outside the family for six months, then three | Included in the $45.50 |
| Regular license | Automatic at 18; or earlier, after a year on the junior license, a crash-free and conviction-free record, and a 30-hour classroom plus six-hour in-car course, on form DL-59 | The course is priced by the school; the DL-59 update card is free, a replacement license $42.50 |
The rules are PennDOT's; the lesson prices are one school's, read October 23, 2026; the road-test prices are the Berks private tester's.
The $45.50 at the start covers the permit and the four-year license; after that the cost is time, plus any lessons you choose.
The six months and the 65 hours of supervised practice.
On the permit your teen drives only with a licensed driver who is at least 21, or a parent, guardian or spouse who is 18 or older and licensed, in the front seat, and never with more passengers than seat belts.
Before the road test, a teen under 18 has to hold the permit for six months and complete 65 hours of supervised driving, including no less than 10 hours at night and 5 hours in bad weather. The hours you certify are the ones driven with licensed drivers 21 or older; on the permit itself a licensed parent, guardian or spouse 18 or older may also supervise, but the form certifies hours with drivers 21 or older.
The 65 hours is the supervised practice a parent signs off on, on form DL-180C. The same form also certifies that your teen printed or viewed PennDOT's materials on the dangers of distracted driving. You sign it in front of a notary, a driver license examiner, a course teacher or a certified third-party examiner. PennDOT asks for the signed form, not a logbook. Hours with a paid instructor count toward the 65 like any other hours with a licensed driver 21 or older, and a driver's education course's six in-car hours count too; what lessons don't buy is a shortcut past the six months.
Where the road test happens in Berks County.
Both Berks driver license centers give the knowledge test and the road test: the Reading center in the Shillington Shopping Center and the Exeter center in Exeter Township. Addresses, hours and what to bring are in our guide to the Berks County driver license centers. The road test is by appointment only, booked online or by calling 1-800-423-5542, with no same-day tests. A teen under 18 can book up to six months ahead, and the state suggests booking on permit day, for the eligibility date printed on the permit (six months after it's issued).
Bring originals only: the permit, form DL-180C for a teen under 18, the car's registration card and current insurance card, and the license of the adult who drove over. Pass at a PennDOT center and the license is issued on the spot. A teen under 18 who fails waits seven days to try again, and a permit allows three tries.
The state also certifies private businesses, called third-party testers, to give the identical road test for their own fee. The only Berks site on that list is John's Driving School, at 2920 Penn Avenue in West Lawn (inside the Yurconic Agency's notary shop). John's prints its test at $99 in the student's car and $150 in the school's car.
What the junior license allows, and how to drop its limits before 18.
The license your teen walks out with is a junior license, the under-18 license that comes with a curfew and passenger limits. The curfew is no driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless a parent, guardian or spouse 18 or older is in the car. A teen who works nights, serves in a volunteer fire company or does public or charitable service during those hours may drive then, carrying a notarized affidavit or certificate of authorization from the employer, supervisor or fire chief.
For the first six months, your teen can carry no more than one passenger under 18 who isn't immediate family unless a parent or guardian is in the car. After that it's no more than three, and the higher limit never applies to a junior driver who was responsible for a crash or convicted of a violation. Six or more points, or a conviction for 26 mph or more over the limit, brings a mandatory 90-day suspension.
The limits fall away automatically at 18. They can fall away before 18 for a teen who has held the junior license for a year, with no crash they were at fault in and no conviction in that year, and who has passed a course approved by the state's Department of Education. That teen applies on form DL-59, notarized, with a parent's consent.
Does driver's ed lower car insurance?
Pennsylvania law requires a discount for only one group, drivers 55 and older who complete a driver improvement course, so a teen's driver-training discount is the insurer's own decision. Two large insurers that sell Pennsylvania auto policies print a driver-training discount for drivers under 21 who complete an approved course, and neither prints the percentage, so the size of it is a question for your own carrier. For what adding a teen does to the premium, read what car insurance costs in Pennsylvania.
Questions parents ask about the junior license.
Does my teen have to take driver's ed to get a license in Pennsylvania?
No. The permit, the six months, the 65 hours and the road test need no school. The approved course is required for one thing only: applying on form DL-59 to drop the junior license's limits before 18, after a year on the junior license.
Can my teen drive friends home on a junior license?
For the first six months, no more than one passenger under 18 who isn't immediate family, unless a parent or guardian is in the car. After that it's no more than three, never for a junior driver who was responsible for a crash or convicted of a violation, and never more passengers than seat belts.
How far ahead can we book the road test?
A teen under 18 can book up to six months ahead, so book on permit day.
So the plan is this: have the DL-180 exam done inside the six months before the birthday, walk into the Reading or Exeter center with the forms and the $45.50, and book the road test that day. If the permit's already in hand, the same plan starts at the hours and the booking. Then start logging hours that week, nights and bad weather included. If you want an instructor for some of them, the driving schools in Berks County page is where to start.
