Notary in Berks County: Where to Go and What It Costs
Where to get a document notarized in Berks County, from your own bank to Saturday and Sunday options, what Pennsylvania lets a notary charge, and what to bring.

Call your own bank or credit union first. Several with Berks County offices will notarize a document for their own customers or members, often free, though some want an appointment and some limit which documents they'll take. Bring a current photo ID, and bring the document unsigned.
A notary is a person commissioned by the state to confirm who's signing a document. You can look up your branch on our list of banks in Berks County. As for cost, Pennsylvania caps a notary's own fee at $5 for a single signature, oath or copy, and reasonable extras like travel can be added. If your branch can't fit you in this week, there are places around the county with Saturday hours.
Start with your own bank or credit union in Berks County.
Your bank is the first call because you're already its customer, and banks and credit unions that notarize usually do it for their own customers or members, often free. So before you drive anywhere, call your branch and ask four things. Will they notarize your kind of document? Do you need an appointment, or can you come in? Can they do it on a Saturday? And is there a fee? It's also worth asking whether the notary will be in on the day you plan to go. Branches are on our list of banks in Berks County, and if you belong to a credit union, credit unions in Berks County has theirs.
Here's what banks and credit unions with Berks offices offer for notary service.
What each bank and credit union's own site said on September 28, 2026. Others with Berks offices may notarize too, so ask your own branch.

The table isn't a complete list, so if yours isn't in it, call your own branch first anyway. If you don't have a local branch, the Pennsylvania Department of State has a free search at notaries.pa.gov where you can find notaries within 10, 20 or 30 miles of an address.
What to bring, and when to sign.
Bring a current, unexpired photo ID: a driver's license, a state ID card or a passport. Other current government ID with your photo or signature can work if the notary is satisfied with it, and the notary may ask for more. If you don't have ID at all, someone can vouch for you, but it has to be a person the notary personally knows who also knows you.
When you sign depends on what you're signing. An affidavit is a written statement you swear is true, in front of the notary. A sworn statement like that has to be signed in front of the notary, and so does any signature the notary is there to witness, so don't sign those at home. An acknowledgment is different. It means confirming, in front of the notary, that a signature on the document is yours, and for that you may sign beforehand, as long as you bring the original and not a photocopy. If you aren't sure which one you have, leave it unsigned; that's never wrong. And if the document has more than one signer, each person signing has to appear before the notary.
A notary can't give legal advice or help you write a legal document unless they're also a lawyer, so what your document needs to say is a question for whoever asked you for it. A notary can refuse if they aren't satisfied about who you are, or that you're signing willingly and understand what you're signing. They also can't notarize something they or their spouse has a stake in.
How much does a notary cost in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania sets the most a notary can charge for each act. An acknowledgment is up to $5 for the first signer and $2 for each additional signer named in the same notary certificate, which is the notary's signed statement on your document. So two signers on one certificate come to $7. An oath or a sworn statement is up to $5 per person. Witnessing a signature is up to $5 per signature. A certified copy, which is a copy the notary certifies matches the original, is up to $5 per copy. A notary can't make a certified copy of a birth or death certificate or a naturalization certificate.
Those caps aren't the whole bill. A notary may charge clerical fees for things like copies, postage, phone calls and travel. The state doesn't set those, but they have to be customary and reasonable, and you should be told before the notarization if one is being added. A notary who charges anything has to give you an itemized receipt, and has to post the fees or tell you them if you ask. So ask on the phone, before you go.
Two kinds of paperwork are free by law. One is the notarized affidavit for an emergency absentee ballot, or for someone who needs help voting by absentee ballot. The other is papers for a veteran's pension or military service, for a veteran, a surviving spouse, an orphan or a parent.

Can you get a document notarized online?
Yes. Remote online notarization means getting it notarized on a video call with a notary, and Pennsylvania made it permanent law in 2020. The notary has to be in Pennsylvania and use a state-approved platform. The session is recorded, and the notary can charge up to $20 more per act for doing it online, on top of the usual fee. If someone asked you for the notarized document, ask them whether an online notarization works for them.
