Firehouse Coffee in Maxatawny Township has been Berks County Living's Best Coffee Spot for four consecutive years, most recently in the 2025 Best of Berks awards. Around it sits a county of shops that roast their own beans or build a drink you would never make at home: Reading Coffee Company in Birdsboro, Crave Cafe on West Penn Avenue, Brakeman's in Boyertown, Deep Roots in West Reading.

We read years of customer reviews for the county's coffee shops and roasters, the local award lists, and what the shops publish about themselves. Everything below is in no particular order.

Firehouse Coffee, Maxatawny. Four years running as Berks County's best coffee spot.

Berks County Living has named it the county's Best Coffee Spot four years in a row, most recently in the 2025 Best of Berks awards, and the magazine credits an intensive in-house roasting process and coffee flavored with oil rather than sugar-based flavorings.

One reviewer wrote that the room feels like a firehouse and that the smell of roasting coffee carries through the air, and another who was given a tour of the roasting process came away impressed by what the team does. One reviewer raved about the coffee tasting station and walked out with two iced coffees, salted caramel and shoo fly pie.

Take home a bag. Flavors reviewers have found on the shelf include bacon and maple syrup, bourbon pecan, blueberry, and shoo fly pie, in whole bean, ground, k cups, and sample sizes. Check the hours before an early drive.

Reading Coffee Company, Birdsboro. Nitro cold brew and a wall of beans.

This is a specialty coffee bar, and the place to bring somebody who has opinions about beans. The company was founded in 1989, its own site says it roasts small-batch specialty coffee daily, and Berks Weekly reported on July 2, 2024 that the Birdsboro cafe at 316 W. Main St. opened with the roastery, retail, and a wine shop on site.

Order the nitro cold brew, which one reviewer rated among the best they had ever had, or the milk and honey cold brew another reviewer called delicious. There is a wall of beans to work through and staff who will talk you through them. One reviewer praised the food and the pastries alongside the coffee, in a room another called beautiful.

Reading Coffee Company, Douglassville. The seasonal latte board.

The second location earns its own trip for the seasonal lattes. One reviewer said the latte was the best they had had in a long, long time. Another reviewer defaults to whatever creative seasonal latte is up. Another has been handed a custom one on a day they could not decide.

One reviewer cannot leave without the iced brown sugar spiced latte and the all-natural energy refreshers. Standards are visible at the bar: one reviewer watched the person pulling their espresso start over because the first shot did not meet his own standard.

Max Crema's Coffee Roasters. French press inside the Shillington Farmers Market.

This roaster operates inside the Shillington Farmers Market building, so check the market's hours before you drive out. French press is the house order, poured in a choice of roasts, and it is what one reviewer stops for after a Saturday morning run. One reviewer called it the best coffee in the county, with service to match.

The daily roast is worth asking about: one reviewer found theirs smoky and flavorful, and could tell how fresh it was. Around the coffee there are gourmet teas including a Pu-erh one reviewer recommends outright, local honey, cold pressed juices, and burlap goods made from the coffee sacks. One reviewer rates its dirty chai latte among the best in the area.

Hill Road Coffee Roasters on East Wyomissing Avenue. Single origin light roasts and a subscription.

Light roasts and single origins, roasted on site, which is a harder combination to find than it sounds. One reviewer said light roasts are usually tough to track down and called this one amazing. Another ordered the Brazil pour over and their husband a latte, and loved both.

The organic light-to-medium Ethiopian Guji brought one reviewer back. Take a pound of beans home, or skip the trip: one reviewer signed up for the coffee subscription and said the delivery that arrived saved their morning. A reviewer said it took very little time to feel like a regular there, with tasting notes that matched the cup.

Four Monkeys Coffee Shop and Roastery, Kutztown. The Barrel of Monkeys blend.

Ask for Barrel of Monkeys. It is the house blend, and reviewers order it by name. A husband-and-wife team roasts on site on a fluid-bed roaster, small-batch and organic, with a focus on Central and South American coffee, per Berks County Living, August 29, 2022.

One reviewer got help choosing beans and a pour over brewed to order out of the deal. The room is small and cozy, so plan on a short sit or a cup to go, and check its social page or call before you head over.

Charlotte Street Coffee Company, Boyertown. Iced lattes with free parking behind the shop.

A roaster with a small shop on East Philadelphia Avenue, plants hanging around the room, and free parking right down the alleyway behind the building, which will do more for your morning than another adjective from us. One reviewer ordered the dirty chai and said it tasted exactly the way one is supposed to.

One reviewer singles out the bagels. One reviewer called the iced latte the best they had had and singled out the almond milk it was made with. Another reviewer split a coffee and a London Fog with their husband and found both fresh.

Crave Cafe on West Penn Avenue. Off-menu lattes and a Readers' Choice lunch finalist.

This is the one that will make you something that is not on the board. One reviewer asked for a matcha latte that was not on the menu and the owner made it anyway, to their delight. Another said the iced caramel latte arrived filled to the brim.

The Reading Eagle Readers' Choice ballot lists it under Lunch. One reviewer describes a coffee house feel with fantastic food and a comfortable dining area.

Brakeman's Cafe, Boyertown. Honey lattes and Twin Valley beans.

Honey is the theme here and it works. One reviewer called the honey lavender latte with oat milk out of this world. Another put the honey bear latte among the best they had ever had, and a third orders it with the baked oatmeal on repeat visits and gets a warm welcome every time.

The beans come from a regional roaster: it pours Twin Valley coffee, per the owner quoted in Berks County Living on August 29, 2022, and per one of our own reviewers, who rates the quality highly. The address is 56 S. Washington St. in Boyertown.

Deep Roots Cafe, West Reading. The bananas foster latte.

Go when you want the drink itself to be the treat. One reviewer called the bananas foster latte the favorite part of their visit, and another described it as smooth, not overly sweet, and tasting fresh.

The cheesecake latte has its own following. One reviewer called it amazing and wonderfully balanced, and another could not stop thinking about its sweet and salty edge. A reviewer flags the biscuit bombs as spectacular, and the specialty drinks read like combinations somebody thought hard about.

Sweetie's Back Porch Cafe, Oley. Espresso soaked bacon in the Oley Valley.

Worth the drive out Memorial Highway. One reviewer compared the room to the European coffee houses they had visited, with a southern feel and a twinge of Savannah or the Keys, bright and comfortable.

Order the espresso soaked bacon, which one reviewer says not to sleep on. One reviewer called the hot latte possibly the best drink of their life, and another who works in the food business said the coffee made them happy. The food is made fresh and one reviewer notes the prices are affordable.

Salt & Light Cafe, downtown Reading. Lattes and crepes on North 5th Street.

Downtown Reading at 134 N. 5th St., and the pairing to know is lattes and crepes. One reviewer put the lattes among the best they have ever had. Another points to the espresso drinks, the freshly made crepes, and banana and Nutella waffles.

Small orders land too: one reviewer called the chai tea latte with almond milk delicious, and a reviewer says the seasonal specials are consistently good. It wears its mission openly, and one reviewer describes it as a place of warmth, connection, and faith.

Morning Fuel on Penn Avenue. A coffee bar behind the breakfast menu.

Morning Fuel is a finalist under Breakfast on the Reading Eagle Readers' Choice ballot. The coffee bar is why it belongs on a coffee page: one reviewer called the atmosphere lovely, full of plants, with a very cute coffee bar, and another named it the best coffee in Reading.

Cafe Folino, Wyomissing. Italian espresso drinks on Hill Avenue.

An Italian cafe at 951 Hill Ave where the espresso drinks are the draw, from the same owners as an Italian restaurant in Mohnton. One reviewer called the Americano outstanding. Another called the caramel latte, breve style, amazing, and one more described waves of euphoria from theirs.

Simply Bold Cafe, West Reading. Coffee, books, and a Penn Avenue room.

A room at 550 Penn Ave that is a bookstore and a boutique as well as a cafe, which makes it the easiest place on this page to lose an hour. One reviewer said the coffee was delicious and smooth and the lattes were made perfectly.

The seasonal drinks are worth a look. One reviewer ordered a pumpkin percolator latte and said the food is something to look forward to.

Berks County coffee awards: Best of Berks and Readers' Choice.

Two local votes shape which coffee names people around here recognize. Berks County Living's Best of Berks 2026 round opened July 1, 2026 and closed to votes that August, with winners named in the December issue.

The Reading Eagle Readers' Choice ballot dates its final voting round August 16 to August 31, 2026, with results on October 11, 2026. It carries no coffee, cafe, or coffeehouse category, so the coffee names on it show up elsewhere: Crave Cafe is a finalist under Lunch and Morning Fuel under Breakfast.

Where to work from a coffee shop in Berks County.

The Bagel Bar Cafe in Kutztown says on its own site that there is always free wifi available along with outdoor patio seating, and that if a laptop or tablet is more your thing, bring it along. Its site posts hours of 7am to 3pm Wednesday through Monday, closed Tuesday, and it pours La Colombe. One reviewer says the coffee, espresso, cappuccino, and teas at the bagel bar cafe are all very good.

Everywhere else, read the room instead of assuming. Look for two-top tables, an outlet you can see from where you would sit, and a wifi password posted somewhere in the open. Those three things together tell you more than any policy page would.

Then be the customer they would want back. Buy something roughly every ninety minutes, leave the four-tops for groups, take phone calls outside, and if people are circling for a table, get the next one to go and finish at home.
