The burger the most sources in Berks County agree on is the Caramel Burger at Louie's Kitchen and Bar in Cumru Township, twin smashed patties under caramelized bacon, caramelized onions and a bacon jam aioli. After that one, the county's best burgers scatter: a farmers market stand in Shillington, brewpubs in Hamburg, a sandwich counter in Reading, a supper club dining room off the turnpike in Morgantown. The one place they all meet is downtown Hamburg on Saturday, September 5, 2026, when the Taste of Hamburg-er Festival takes over eight blocks from 10am to 6pm, rain or shine, free to walk into.

The top-ranking burger list for Berks County is mostly not Berks County.

Search the phrase and the highest-ranking answer is a platform roundup of ten places, four of which are currently operating Berks County businesses. Restaurant Blackbird in West Reading is still on it, and it closed in September 2025 when its owners accepted an offer for the space from another local business that had outgrown its own, per a Reading Eagle report from September 17, 2025. Five of the rest are in Bucks County, Chester County, Chester and Delaware Counties, Lehigh County and Maryland, and the page that ranks for the exact phrase is a single diner's write-up of one bar on Pike Street in Reading.

How we picked these Berks County burgers.

We read the dated local food coverage, the festival's own 2026 lineup and its award history, the menus themselves and the review data behind our listings, then kept the places where one specific burger kept coming up by name. Two of these we added because we have eaten them ourselves and nobody has written them up yet. Nobody paid for a place here, nothing below is numbered, the sections are grouped by geography, and more burger listings across Berks County sit on the category page.

The Berks County burger nearly every source agrees on.

Louie's Kitchen and Bar and the Caramel Burger in Flying Hills.

Order the Caramel Burger. It is twin smashed four-ounce patties with caramelized bacon, caramelized onions, American and provolone and a bacon jam aioli, and it is the closest thing this county has to a settled answer.

Louie's is the only name that turns up in every independent channel. Berks County Living reported it as Best Burger in the 2025 Best of Berks, it took a group Grand Prize at the Taste of Hamburg-er Festival in 2024, and it heads both of the big platform lists for the county. Its own menu still carries the award on the item.

Diners land in the same place. One called the Caramel Burger the best burger they had ever had, and another wrote that it was the best burger at the whole festival.

The rest of the smash menu rewards a slow read. There is an Oklahoma onion burger, a cheeseburger folded into grilled cheese on Texas toast, a Gizmo built as a tribute to the Birdsboro original from Miller's Lunch, and smash burger tacos that more than one reviewer brings up by name.

It sits on Village Center Drive in the Flying Hills section of Cumru Township, with a Reading mailing address and a golf course out the windows. Go hungry.

Get the Berks BBQ Burger. Pike burgers are eight ounces of Black Angus brisket on a brioche roll with fresh cut fries, and two reviewers name the BBQ build specifically.

One diner's write-up of this bar is what sits at the top of a county-wide search, which is reason enough to walk in and see for yourself. It has been open on Pike Street since 1985 and changed hands in January 2022.

The burger page runs long past the classics: a brunch burger under a sunny side egg, a lobster burger with Cooper sharp, the Alamo with fresh jalapenos and avocado, or build your own from the toppings list. Add the truffle fries.

Mike's is a sandwich shop and deli on Centre Avenue that people walk into for cheesesteaks and walk out of talking about the smash burgers. The double smash cheeseburger is the order, and one diner described it in a single word: beast.

Reviewers name the cook, Ron, right alongside the food, and describe a staff that greets you at the door. Order, wait, eat, leave happy.

Mike's Sandwich Shop

Craft 2700 at Freymoyer's and the smash burger on Kutztown Road.

The smash burger here is very good, and we say that having eaten it rather than having read about it. Order it, and start with the crab dip. One diner put exactly those two things in the same sentence, and another called it the best burger they had had.

The listings still carry the old hotel name alongside the current one. It is on Kutztown Road north of the city, with a Reading mailing address and a 19605 ZIP that puts it on Muhlenberg ground. Diners call the room beautiful and the decor the thing that makes them look up from the menu.

Ask for the patio. The beer flights are worth building one of, and one diner had their server pick the four.

Craft 2700

Sizzling Bites on North Fifth Street Highway, the smash burger nobody mentions.

This is the one we would not have found by reading. Sizzling Bites is a halal counter on North Fifth Street Highway in Muhlenberg, and the smash burger is a quiet item on a menu that is mostly platters. It is very good. Nothing we read while putting this together mentions it, which is the whole reason it is here.

The rest of the menu is what the place is known for. Reviewers name the chicken platter over and over, one calling it one of the best they have had, and the sauces get their own following: "Tons of different sauces and combinations," as one put it. Portions run large for what you pay, and one reviewer summed the value up as "so much food for a good price."

It is also one of the few halal kitchens in this part of the county, which reviewers raise unprompted. "So glad to see a halal spot in this area. Very comparable to NY halal carts," one wrote. Another described being about to pray on a napkin and having a staff member hurry over with a prayer mat. The counter runs to 11pm most nights and to 1am on Friday and Saturday, which is later than most of this list.

Sizzling Bites Reading

Build it yourself here. Bertie's puts a brioche bun and a properly handled patty in front of you and hands over the toppings, and one diner called it one of the best burgers they had had in a long time.

Bertie's took Best Bar Food in Berks County Living's 2025 Best of Berks, an award its own site still displays. The address is Old Friedensburg Road in Exeter Township, with a Reading mailing address on the envelope.

The back deck is the reason to get there early. It is screened in, heated with propane when the weather turns, and the owner keeps blankets on the chairs. Order the mango habanero wings while you decide on the burger.

That Burger Place at the Shillington Farmers Market.

This is the value pick. Smash patties made to order at a stand inside the Shillington Farmers Market, cooked in front of you, with fries that reviewers bring up alongside them.

A BCTV food feature from January 30, 2026 put these among the best burgers in Berks at roughly half what a sit-down restaurant charges for the same meal. The stand opened in late 2023 and moved to a larger space in 2024.

Two things to know before you drive out. It is cash only, and it keeps farmers market hours rather than restaurant hours, so check the day.

Ask what the burger of the month is. One diner went back for the mushroom swiss three times in just over a week. One diner was handed a sample of the pulled pork by the owner, Ivan, while they waited, and if you want the whole burger without the bun, the loaded fry meals put the patties and toppings over a pile of fries.

The smashburger is the order and the building is the bonus. Black Sheep opened in spring 2025 in the former Camelot Inn on Fritztown Road, and diners write about speakeasy-era history and a kitchen that is clearly enjoying itself.

Reviewers describe the smashburger as cooked to perfection and put the frycuterie board next to it, a shared platter of potatoes done several ways including the giant spiraled ones. There is a deconstructed French onion soup on the menu, which tells you the tone.

It is also one of the four names on that county list that is actually in Berks County.

All American Sports Pub in Sinking Spring and the Cowboy Burger.

Order the Cowboy Burger: two quarter-pound smashed patties with American cheese, bacon, BBQ and pickles, served with fries. One diner called the burgers here the best ever and said they come out cooked the way you ordered them.

There is a third-pound classic cheeseburger on the same page if you want the plain version. Another diner summed the whole place up in six words: friendly folks, cold beer, great burger.

It is a sports pub and it behaves like one. Outdoor Jenga, corn hole, pool and shuffleboard, and it is the room people pick for fight nights.

Come on burger night and build something strange. The toppings run past the usual into roasted garlic, sauteed hot peppers and capers, and one diner noted that a burger ordered rare arrived rare.

The rest of the week the Windsor is an old-house dining room on West Lancaster Avenue known for house-made pasta and sauces. Call ahead to confirm which night burger night falls on before you make the drive.

A brick-oven pizza kitchen on Penn Avenue keeps a full page of specialty burgers, and a great burger does not care what the sign out front says. The Toasted Pecan Burger is Black Angus with toasted pecans, caramelized red onion, gorgonzola and watercress, and it gets split at tables that walked in for pizza.

The specialty section keeps going: a burrata burger with black truffle and truffle honey, a bison burger with cabernet onion, a buffalo burger with celery apple slaw, a crab cake sitting on top of a beef patty. Two reviewers name the truffle fries, and one of them puts the blue cheese wings alongside.

Hamburg is the burger capital of Berks County for one Saturday in September.

Downtown Hamburg hands its streets over to burgers on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The Taste of Hamburg-er Festival runs 10am to 6pm, rain or shine, admission free, in its 23rd year, organized by Our Town Foundation across eight blocks.

The festival's own lineup page listed 48 burger stands as of August 27, 2026 and says more are added as they register. Judging covers Best Taste, Best Appearance, Originality and Grand Champion. There is also an all-star burger eating competition, a Mooing Contest sponsored by Deitsch Eck, a Dine and Dash burgers and trail race, and four stages of live music, with the beer and wine gardens running to 7pm.

One thing to get right about the trophies, and every festival award result in this post comes from a single local dining site's festival archive. The festival splits entrants into groups and awards a Grand Prize per group, Red, White and Blue in 2025 and Groups A, B and C in 2023. So several businesses can hold a Grand Prize from the same year, and a Taste of Hamburg-er win is a group win.

Copperz is the Hamburg name to beat on festival day. That same archive has it taking the Blue Group Grand Prize in 2025 and splitting group honors in 2024, and it is registered again for 2026.

The brewery sits on South Fourth Street and is worth a stop on an ordinary Tuesday. Reviewers point at the giant pretzel and the beer flights, and they name their server Kim.

On September 5 it is a street stand. The rest of the year it is a brewpub with a kitchen behind it.

Order a smash burger and a flight. 1787 builds them from two four-ounce patties on a brioche bun, and the menu runs a mushroom swiss with A1, a bacon and Carolina BBQ version, and a comeback sauce build with pickle slaw.

Diners recommend the smash burgers by name, and the smash burger tacos sit over on the taco section for anyone who wants the same idea in a tortilla. It is on South Fourth Street in downtown Hamburg with plenty of street parking, and it makes a good stop on a Hawk Mountain day.

It is on the 2026 festival lineup too, so on September 5 you can eat at their stand and then walk a few blocks and eat at their bar.

1787 Brewing Company

Order the Glazed and Confused: bacon, egg and a burger on a donut. One diner went in unsure about it and came out a believer.

The Hamburg Diner is on the festival's published 2026 lineup, which makes it one of the stands competing on September 5 and also a room you can sit down in on State Street the rest of the year. Red swivel stools at the counter, old-fashioned booths along the side wall, and pancakes made in front of you while you sit there.

Diners write that first-timers leave with a dessert on the house, and one called their chocolate cake off the hook. It opens at 6am most days.

Hamburg Diner

More Berks County burger stands on the 2026 festival lineup.

Not every trophy from this festival belongs to Berks County. Per that same archive, recent headline winners include a truck from northeastern Pennsylvania and another from Northampton County, with past champions out of Harrisburg and Baltimore. The Berks-based winners are the ones named above.

Burger night is the reason to plan the drive. One diner singled out the smokehouse burger and left it at that.

The posted burger page is short and good: a Blue Moon with American cheese and bacon jam, The Barrel with bleu cheese crumbles and balsamic glaze, a Cowboy with pepper jack cheese and onion straws, and a jalapeno popper with cheddar, bacon and a sour cream side. The giant pretzel comes up in reviews too, described as roughly the size of a steering wheel.

It is on North Reading Avenue with a deck, and there is a separate room in back for large groups.

Barrel and Ale

Heritage Restaurant in Morgantown, a burger right off the turnpike.

The Black and Blue is the order. One diner called it the best black and bleu burger flat out, and another put the burgers here among the best they had ever eaten.

Heritage is a traditional American family restaurant with old-timey supper club decor, a full bar and a seasonal deck, sitting on Morgantown Road just off the turnpike. The food tastes homemade and diners say so directly.

Leave room for the peanut butter pie, or do what one diner did and take a slice home.

Velvet Restaurant opened on Kutztown Road in Laureldale in July 2026, per a local dining site's openings page updated August 25, 2026, which described its burgers as a fine dining take on the form. It is a fine dining room first, with diners naming the lychee martini and the chef's tableside rounds, and it is open seven days from noon.
