About Lancaster Stormers
The Lancaster Stormers are a professional baseball club based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, playing their home games at the ballpark located at 650 North Prince Street on the northwestern edge of the city's downtown. The franchise competes in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an independent circuit that operates outside the affiliated minor league system while maintaining a formal partnership with Major League Baseball. The club began play in 2005 and has been a fixture of the Lancaster sports and entertainment calendar ever since, drawing fans from Lancaster County, York, Harrisburg, Reading and the surrounding region.
For most of its history the team was known as the Lancaster Barnstormers, a name drawn from the barnstorming tradition of touring ballclubs that crisscrossed the country in the early twentieth century. The organization shortened the name to the Lancaster Stormers ahead of the 2024 season, retaining the same ownership, ballpark and community programming.
The Ballpark
The stadium opened in 2005 on a redeveloped industrial parcel in the city's northwest quadrant, an area that has since seen considerable reinvestment. Known for many years as Clipper Magazine Stadium and later carrying Penn Medicine naming rights, the facility seats roughly 6,000 in fixed seating, with additional capacity on the outfield lawn and in standing room areas. The brick facade and clock tower were designed to echo the industrial architecture of the surrounding neighborhood, and the layout places the playing field below street level so that spectators enter at concourse height.
The concourse wraps the field, allowing fans to circle the entire ballpark without leaving sight of play. Seating options range from field level boxes behind home plate and along the baselines to reserved grandstand seating, picnic areas, party decks, suites and the berm beyond the outfield wall. Concessions include traditional ballpark fare along with local specialties, and a dedicated beer stand along the first base side stocks regional craft selections alongside domestic options. A team store on the concourse carries jerseys, caps and merchandise.
Baseball and the Atlantic League
The Atlantic League has historically served as a proving ground and second chance for players with major league experience, prospects released by affiliated organizations and international talent seeking exposure to North American scouts. Hundreds of Atlantic League players have gone on to sign contracts with MLB organizations, and Lancaster has sent its share of alumni back into affiliated baseball. The competitive level is generally regarded as comparable to Double A or Triple A, which means fans see experienced professional players rather than developmental rosters.
Since 2019 the league has operated as an official MLB Partner League, and it has been used to test experimental rules before their potential adoption at higher levels. Automated ball and strike systems, larger bases, pitch timers and adjustments to mound distance and defensive positioning have all been trialed in Atlantic League games, meaning Lancaster fans have often seen innovations in person years before they reached the major leagues. The club has competed for league championships throughout its history, winning titles in 2006 and 2014, and has appeared in the postseason on multiple occasions.
The regular season runs from late April through September, with a schedule of roughly seventy home dates. Games are typically played in the evening with afternoon starts on selected weekends and holidays.
Game Day Programming
The club builds much of its schedule around themed promotions and giveaway nights. Past programming has included superhero and movie tribute nights, heritage and cultural celebrations, military and first responder appreciation games, scout nights with on-field campouts, bobblehead and jersey giveaways, and specialty uniform games benefiting local causes. Between-innings contests, mascot appearances and on-field games involving fans are a standard part of the presentation, and the club schedules postgame fireworks on selected dates through the season.
Amenities aimed at younger fans include a playground area, a carousel and a miniature golf feature within the ballpark grounds, along with a kids club membership program. The organization also maintains an active community presence through school reading programs, charitable partnerships and appearances by team personnel and the mascot at events across Lancaster County.
Group Events and Private Rentals
The ballpark functions as an event venue in addition to a sports facility. Suites, club boxes, picnic pavilions and party decks are available for corporate outings, birthday parties, reunions, school groups and nonprofit fundraisers, with catering packages available. One suite space is outfitted with pinball machines and arcade games, a feature that has become a popular draw for company events and private parties. Indoor spaces at the stadium are also rented for meetings, banquets and receptions during and outside the baseball season, and the field itself has hosted amateur tournaments, high school and college games, charity events and community gatherings.
Off-Season Events
The organization keeps the property active during the winter months. A drive-through holiday light display has become an annual tradition at the ballpark, with vehicles routed through illuminated installations while a synchronized soundtrack plays over a designated radio frequency. Concessions are typically available on site during the event, and admission is charged per vehicle. Other off-season programming has included winter markets, youth clinics and community events.
