Location and Setting

Shillington is a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, situated approximately five miles southwest of downtown Reading. The Heritage of Green Hills occupies a campus setting that includes landscaped grounds and outdoor spaces designed for resident use. The community's address on Tranquility Lane reflects its positioning in a quieter residential area while maintaining proximity to the services and amenities of the greater Reading region.

The campus includes multiple buildings and outdoor amenities, with the grounds maintained for both aesthetic appeal and functional use by residents. The property features walking areas and outdoor gathering spaces that residents can access throughout the year, weather permitting.

Levels of Care

As a continuing care retirement community, The Heritage of Green Hills provides a spectrum of residential and care options designed to serve seniors at different stages of their lives. This model allows residents to transition between levels of care as their needs evolve, often without relocating to an entirely different facility.

Independent living accommodations serve residents who maintain autonomy in their daily activities but prefer the convenience and social opportunities of community living. These residents typically manage their own schedules, participate in community activities at their discretion, and benefit from services such as dining, housekeeping, and maintenance without requiring personal care assistance.

Assisted living services provide additional support for residents who need help with activities of daily living. This level of care typically includes assistance with tasks such as medication management, bathing, dressing, and mobility, while still encouraging residents to maintain as much independence as possible.

Memory care represents the most specialized level of service at the community, designed specifically for residents living with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or other cognitive conditions. Memory care units typically feature secured environments, specialized programming, and staff trained in dementia care techniques. The community's Care Center houses these assisted living and memory care services in a dedicated building.

Dining Program

The Heritage of Green Hills operates an on-site dining program that serves as a central component of daily life for residents. The community maintains dining facilities where residents gather for meals prepared by culinary staff. The dining program features rotating menus that change regularly to provide variety, with options available at multiple meal times.

The dining experience at the community functions as both a practical service and a social venue. Residents eat in communal dining areas where they can share meals with neighbors and friends, making mealtimes an opportunity for regular social interaction. The community also hosts special dining events periodically, offering elevated meal experiences beyond the standard daily menu.

Menu planning at the facility takes into account both nutritional considerations appropriate for older adults and the preferences of the resident population. The kitchen prepares meals that accommodate various dietary needs while aiming to provide dishes that residents find appealing and satisfying.

Activities and Programming

The Heritage of Green Hills maintains an activities program designed to provide residents with opportunities for physical exercise, social engagement, creative expression, and intellectual stimulation. The community employs activities staff who coordinate and lead programming throughout the week.

Physical fitness options at the community include aquatic facilities with a heated pool and hot tub. The pool accommodates both recreational swimming and organized exercise programs, including water-based fitness activities. Land-based fitness programming includes yoga classes and other exercise sessions led by staff instructors.

Beyond fitness, the activities calendar encompasses a range of programming categories. Social events provide opportunities for residents to gather informally or participate in organized functions. Educational programs may include lectures, discussions, or classes on various topics. Creative activities offer outlets for artistic expression. The community also organizes trips and outings that take residents off campus for excursions to local destinations.

The breadth of programming reflects an operational philosophy that emphasizes keeping residents active and engaged. The activities schedule runs throughout each day, providing multiple options for residents to participate according to their interests and energy levels.

The campus at The Heritage of Green Hills includes various shared spaces and amenities available to residents. The aquatic center with its pool and hot tub serves as a recreational and fitness resource. Common areas throughout the community provide spaces for socializing, reading, or quiet activities.

The Care Center represents a newer addition to the campus, housing the assisted living and memory care services in purpose-built facilities. This building was designed specifically to accommodate the needs of residents requiring higher levels of care and includes features appropriate to those populations.

The community maintains wheelchair accessibility throughout its facilities. Accessible features include wheelchair-accessible entrances and a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, allowing residents and visitors with mobility limitations to navigate the campus.

Transition and Move-In Services

Recognizing that relocating to a retirement community represents a significant life transition, The Heritage of Green Hills offers relocation services to assist new residents and their families with the moving process. These services aim to reduce the logistical burden and stress associated with downsizing from a private home and establishing residence in a new living environment.

The community's sales and admissions staff guide prospective residents through the decision-making process, providing tours of the facilities and information about available accommodations and services. This process typically involves multiple visits and conversations as individuals and families evaluate whether the community meets their needs and preferences.

Resident Demographics and Tenure

The Heritage of Green Hills serves a population of older adults, many of whom have lived at the community for extended periods. Long-term residency is common at the facility, with some individuals maintaining their homes there for more than a decade. This pattern of extended tenure suggests that residents who choose the community tend to remain satisfied with their decision over time.

The resident population includes individuals at various stages of aging and with different care needs, from fully independent seniors to those requiring memory care support. This diversity reflects the continuing care model, which anticipates that residents may progress through different levels of service during their time at the community.
