Preschool Early Intervention for Children Ages 3 to 5 in Berks County
The Berks County Intermediate Unit runs the Early Intervention program for families with children ages 3 to 5 who have developmental delays. It is a public special education service, and if a child is eligible, they receive appropriate educational services at no cost through federal and state funds.
Early Intervention is a process that brings together parents, caregivers, service providers and others significantly involved with your child. The services address your concerns about your child's development and build your family's capacity to meet those needs, in the setting where children would be if they did not have a disability. Practitioners work with families, caregivers and educators to help children grow and learn. One approach described by the program is Embedded Instruction, in which your child's Early Intervention provider and teacher build learning into daily activities such as singing a song, playing with blocks or getting dressed. The program also offers short, one-minute videos on the five developmental areas of Preschool Early Intervention.
To start, a child is referred for screening and evaluation to determine whether special education services are needed to support learning. Parents and guardians, agency personnel, preschools, day care providers and medical practitioners may all make a referral. Referral forms can be downloaded from the program's page at berksiu.org/page/early-intervention-ei, in English and in Spanish. The page does not say where to send the completed form or how long the evaluation process takes, so ask when you contact the office.
The program is free. It is paid for by state and federal funds and is provided at no cost to families.
