One on One In-Home Support for People With Intellectual Disabilities and Autism
Access Services runs Community Engagement Supports, a program in which a Direct Support Professional works one on one with a person who has an intellectual disability or autism, in their home and out in the community. The staff member helps the person set personal goals and learn the skills to build community: having meaningful relationships, taking part in activities, making choices and being included in everyday life. Access Services describes the program as encouraging personal growth and helping each person become an active member of their community.
The Berks County listing describes the program as being for adults with intellectual disabilities and autism, while the program page is titled for adults and children with intellectual disabilities and autism. Access Services offers the program in Berks County and in Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Pike and Schuylkill counties.
You do not sign up directly. Individuals are referred to Community Engagement Supports through the Office of Development Programs in their county. If you are interested, speak with your appointed Supports Coordinator about becoming involved. The service is funded through the Home and Community Based Services Waiver Program or through a private pay arrangement, so what you pay, if anything, depends on which of those applies to you.
Access Services says it tries to make a quality match between the person served and a knowledgeable Direct Support Professional, and that many of its Direct Support Professionals are long-standing team members who have built lasting relationships with the people they support.
