Screenings are done on individuals of all ages, though children must be at least 3 years old. Early screening matters most for young children. Parents may quickly recognize a baby with severe or profound hearing loss, but moderate or high-frequency hearing loss may go unnoticed for several years unless it is formally tested. All babies should be screened for hearing loss no later than 1 month of age, ideally before leaving the hospital after birth, and a baby who does not pass a screening should get a full hearing test no later than 3 months of age. Even a mild or partial hearing loss can affect a child's ability to speak and understand language, and hearing problems can be treated if they are caught early.
For Berks County residents there is no charge. Out of county residents pay a small fee, and the page does not say how much it is.

If you fail the hearing screening, staff will direct you to an audiologist or ENT doctor for further testing and diagnosis. A screening is a first check rather than a diagnosis.
