Vision Loss Support Services From the Vision Resource Center of Berks County
The Vision Resource Center of Berks County helps people who are blind or have vision loss with daily activities, safe travel, and support groups, so they can keep their quality of life and live independently. The team has been doing this work for over 96 years.
The support services are free. The center has been providing free support services, vision screenings, and meaningful employment since 1929.
The services are for individuals with vision impairment and blindness in Berks County. The monthly Sight Loss Support Group is open to individuals who are blind or are visually impaired and their family members, friends, and caregivers. It offers support and problem-solving and discusses the latest technology and medical breakthroughs. A separate Spanish Speaking Sight Loss group supports people within Berks County who are blind or have vision loss and feel more comfortable within the Spanish speaking community; that group meets to talk through problems and possible solutions for everyday difficulties with visual impairment.
There are also monthly social and recreational activities. The Lunch Bunch meets at various restaurants throughout Berks County for socialization and is open to people with visual impairments or who are blind, as well as their family members, friends, and caregivers. Other programs include a musical and lunch, crafting sessions, dances, holiday shopping, guided walking tours, pool parties, trivia and game days, and descriptive movies.
To get started as a new client, there are two steps:
- Schedule an intake appointment
- Sign a release form for a copy of the most recent vision report
If you or your loved one qualifies, referrals and services can be put in place.
The center is at 2020 Hampden Blvd, Reading, PA 19604. The phone number is (610) 375-8407, and you can also fill out the contact form at vrcberks.org/contact to ask for support. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The center is closed Friday through Sunday.
