School Help for Families Without Stable Housing in Boyertown
Boyertown Area School District's Families in Transition work helps children and youth who do not have stable housing enroll in school immediately and get the support they need to keep learning. It follows the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
A child or youth is eligible if they have been displaced from their home and are living in a place that is not fixed, regular, or adequate. That includes sharing the housing of others because of loss of housing, economic hardship or a similar reason; staying in a place not meant for sleeping, such as a vehicle, park, hotel or campground; living in a homeless or domestic violence shelter or transitional housing; living outside the home as an unaccompanied youth; or being the child of a migrant family in any of those situations.
A student may enroll in the school serving the area where they are currently living, or stay in their school of origin, meaning the school they attended before becoming homeless or the school where they were last enrolled, when that is in the student's best interest. Enrollment can happen without the documents normally required, such as proof of residency, immunization records or other enrollment paperwork, while those records are being obtained.
Students experiencing homelessness have the right to continue their education in their current school and receive transportation, or to enroll immediately in the school where they are temporarily housed even without the usual paperwork. They may take part in all applicable school programs, including supplemental services, receive free lunch, and get assistance with school-related expenses such as supplies, clothing and uniforms. Students living apart from a parent or legal guardian have those same rights, and can also enroll without a parent or guardian, receive support to stay on track for promotion and graduation, and get help with college planning and with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as an independent student, when eligible.

You can also reach out about a child or youth you know who may qualify. The district office is at 911 Montgomery Avenue, Boyertown PA 19512, and 610-367-6031 is the general district number. If the district determines a student is not eligible, it must give written notice of the reason for the denial and of the right to appeal, and it issues a Dispute letter and a Notice of Rights / Procedural Safeguards letter explaining the appeal process. During a dispute, the student must be immediately enrolled and allowed to attend the requested school until the matter is resolved.
Printed information sheets on educational rights for students and for parents are posted in English and Spanish, along with the Pennsylvania dispute letter in both languages.
