Integrated Student Supports in Reading and Antietam Schools From Communities In Schools
Communities In Schools of Eastern Pennsylvania places a Site Coordinator inside partner schools to connect students with the help they need to stay in school and learn, and Reading School District and Antietam School District are among its 11 school district partners.
The program is called Integrated Student Supports. It is a model of wraparound supports that looks at the whole child, combining social, emotional and academic development while addressing the out-of-school problems that keep kids from coming to class ready to learn. The Site Coordinator works one-on-one with students who need help, manages relationships with community partners, and brings new services into the school building.
Support comes in three tiers. Tier I School-Wide Supports reach most students in a school. Tier II Targeted Group Supports and Tier III Case-Management focus on students with significant needs. Before the supports start, the Site Coordinator completes a needs assessment and a school-support plan that sets school-wide goals such as increasing attendance or improving family engagement. Principals approve the plan, and it uses data and feedback from teachers, parents and guidance counselors. The Site Coordinator then works with principals, teachers and guidance counselors through the school year.
CIS staff use other tools alongside this work. All team members are trained in the Search Institute Developmental Relationships Framework, and all staff are trained in Restorative Practices and trauma-informed practices. With middle and high school students, staff use the SEAD Assessment, a student self-report survey on skills such as emotion regulation, academic motivation, self-control and empathy, available in English and Spanish.
