Help for Students Struggling at School From Exeter Township School District
The Student Assistance Program at Exeter Township School District is a process for identifying, assisting and supporting students who may be experiencing barriers to learning because of academic, social or emotional struggles. The team is a combination of school and agency staff who help families find services inside the school and, if needed, in the community.
It is meant for students in the district whose parents or teachers notice concerning changes, such as withdrawing from family, friends or activities, changing friends, unexplained physical injuries, feeling sad, depression or sudden mood swings, talking about suicide, defying authority at home and school, acting aggressively, a sudden drop in grades, lying, wanting to avoid school, or experimenting with alcohol or drugs. The team also helps with a child's reaction to the recent death of a loved one, a divorce, a family relocation, a relationship problem, bullying or another traumatic event.
The team cannot diagnose a condition or provide therapy. What it does is give parents information and resources so they can make an informed decision that fits their student's needs and wishes. Schools gather observable information about how the student is doing in classes, and the team works with you to develop a plan of action to help your child succeed in school. The parent is part of the team, and the team will not proceed if you are not on board. Participation is voluntary, and the SAP team's information is completely confidential.
Anyone can make a referral. Some students are referred by teachers or other school personnel, friends or family members can let the team know they are worried, and a child can go directly to the SAP team to ask for help.
