Homeless Student Rights and Services From Daniel Boone Area School District
Daniel Boone Area School District helps students who do not have stable housing stay in school, using the rights given by the federal McKinney-Vento Act and the Pennsylvania Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program.
You may qualify if you are living in a shelter, in a motel or campground because there is no other adequate place to stay, in a car, park, abandoned building, bus or train station, or doubled up with other people because you lost housing or because of economic hardship.
As an eligible student you have the right to a free, appropriate public education, and to enroll in school immediately even if you do not have the documents normally required. You can attend classes while the school gathers those documents. You can enroll in the local school or keep attending your school of origin, meaning the school you went to when you were permanently housed or the last school you were enrolled in, if that is your preference and it is feasible. If the district believes the school you chose is not in your best interest, it will give you a written explanation of its position and tell you about your right to appeal. You can also get transportation to and from the school of origin if you ask for it, and educational services comparable to those given to other students, based on your needs.
Services the district lists as examples for homeless students include the Blazer Integrated Learning Summer Learning Program, ESAP and SAP programs, the free lunch program, credit recovery and transportation.
